The Mountain: A Glimpse into a Grey World
Welcome, readers, to a new tale born from the ashes of a world transformed. In “The Mountain,” we step into a desolate, grey landscape where the air is thick with ash and the past clings faintly to the present. This story begins with Jake Conway, a man returning to his mountain cabin after a reluctant exodus south, navigating a world dulled by an unrelenting fall of ash. Along the way, he encounters Heidi George, a neighbor whose vivid pink house now fades into the monochromatic wilderness, a symbol of resilience amid ruin.
This scene is just the start—a snapshot of the Yellowstone narrative, one that explores survival, memory, and the quiet strength found in human connection. The ash has fallen, but what caused it? Why have Jake and Heidi returned to a place others abandoned? These questions linger, and I invite you to join me as I unravel them. Here on tornmacalester.com, I’ll be sharing more snippets, reflections, and updates as “The Mountain” takes shape. If you’re drawn to stories of stark beauty and haunting mystery, stick around—there’s more to come. Share your thoughts in the comments or connect with me on X at @Torn_Macalester.
The MountainBy Torn MacAlester Original Photo by Jose Vega from Pexels. Modified to grayscale and blurred using GIMP. I sighed, looking at the grey landscape, trying to estimate the direction to the cabin. I abandoned the mountain, like everyone else, when the ash fell. They didn’t expect us to get a lot, but they encouraged everyone to move south if they could, and I could. I loaded the jeep and headed down the mountain and headed south to New Mexico with a relative. After about six weeks, I’d worn out my welcome, and I returned home. Now I […]What do you think of Jake’s return? What secrets might the ash-covered mountain hold? Until next time, keep exploring the shadows of the unknown.

Building Alien Worlds with Scientific Rigor: Introducing the DKF Framework for Science Fiction
World Building for Science FictionImage by Snapwire on pexels I wanted to share some insight into the world building process that I am using in my science fiction stories. First off, most would call my science fiction as ‘Hard’ science fiction because of my use of scientific rigor when developing my stories. For myself, it’s part of the reason for storytelling. The situations I like to consider an interesting science or engineering problem as part of my story. As part of that effort, I try to keep the science as correct as possible. The question that every science fiction author faces at some point […]

“Drive to Houston” — A Tale of Resilience Amid Crisis
A Journey into Shackleton’s Shadows As NASA shuts down non-essential programs to focus on indoor farming, Jacob faces the daunting task of coordinating the abandonment of the space station. His determination to preserve a piece of it for future generations sparks tension with bureaucrats and hope among his team. The story unfolds with intense moments, from a risky Soyuz descent to the crew’s miraculous survival, culminating in Jacob’s reluctant acceptance of a leadership role in a reborn space agency. This tale blends human resilience with the harsh realities of a post-disaster world. Join Jacob as he navigates ash-choked roads, bureaucratic battles, and the drive he’s come to dread. Stay tuned for more updates on this unfolding saga!Drive to Houston by Torn MacAlesterTime to go, the alarm indicated. Jacob Conner dreaded the announcement, regarding it as a horrible turn of events. It meant he needed to get to Houston to support the space station for NASA. As a lead Astronaut, it was his job, forcing him to make the commutes from his home in Dallas. I hate this drive to Houston, thought Jacob. The trip from Dallas to Houston had always been difficult, but now, in the falling ash of Yellowstone, it neared impossible. The ash was everywhere since the explosion. Nothing escaped it. Ash wreaked havoc on cars, clogging up windshields, […]Stay Connected Stay ConnectedVisit tornmacalester.com regularly for more insights into the Fabulae Lunae universe, including updates on

Welcome to the Lunar Abyss: Discover Descent into Darkness
A Journey into Shackleton’s Shadows
Descent into Darkness
unfolds at Space Center, but its heart lies in Shackleton Crater, a permanently shadowed region near the lunar south pole. Nils, a seasoned astronaut with a troubled past, and a strong veteran astronaut Moses (Mose) Crane, conducting his last journey in space, lead a mission to extract an ice core that could secure an ice core sample. The story builds as Mose and Nils descend into the darkness toward the crater limb. This tale is a cornerstone of the Fabulae Lunae saga, blending hard science fiction with a psychological edge. It’s a love letter to the Moon’s mysteries and a cautionary tale about its difficulties.Inspired by Lunar Science I rooted Descent into Darkness in real lunar research, using my science and engineering background. Shackleton Crater and other crater’s permanently shadowed floors harbor water ice, a finding confirmed by NASA’s Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS). This ice, vital for ISRU (in situ resource utilization), mirrors current Artemis goals to sustain lunar bases. One lander of Project Artimis may perform the landing on the Shackleton rim. Yet, I’ve woven in fictional twists that include the struggles with rival astronauts.Meet the Stakes and Stories of the Lunadyne Incident and Other Stories

The Lunar Crawler of Golf and Outgassing: A Blend of Fiction and Artemis Innovation
The Crawler: A Workhorse of the Lunar Frontier In
Golf and Outgassing
, the crawler is a six-wheeled, pressurized marvel designed for lunar exploration in a shirt-sleeve environment, reducing the need for extensive extravehicular activity (EVA). Picture a vehicle resembling a robust passenger van, its panels metal-covered with Kevlar to shield against regolith abrasion — a wheeled spaceship that carries 50-gallon drum-sized experiment packages. This crawler serves as Annie MacInturner’s mobile base as she and Milton Johnson tackle the Fra Mauro highlands, unloading gear and investigating a skylight cave near Cone Crater. Its sturdy build and versatility make it indispensable. The crawler’s design reflects a future where lunar missions prioritize efficiency and crew safety. Built for the Lunar frontier but suffering from the limitations of budget and acceptable risk margins. Will it be enough? This tension drives the narrative, blending awe with skepticism.Ties to Artemis Technology The crawler in
Golf and Outgassing
draws inspiration from NASA’s Artemis program, which is pushing the boundaries of lunar mobility. The Artemis Lunar Terrain Vehicle (LTV), currently in development with industry partners, aims to transport two astronauts across the lunar surface while operating remotely—a concept mirrored in the story’s crawler. NASA’s Ground Test Unit (GTU), a prototype tested at Johnson Space Center, resembles a hybrid of a tractor and golf cart, testing designs that could develop into pressurized rovers like the JAXA-inspired models. These vehicles must handle the Moon’s harsh terrain and support longer missions, which aligns with the crawler’s role in hauling experiments and navigating Fra Mauro’s challenges. However, the Artemis public relations often glosses over the clunky realities of these prototypes—weight constraints, fuel inefficiencies, and the reliance on potentially outdated tech. My engineering background tells me the science is solid. Golf and Outgassing assumes a working crawler, which becomes a recurring tech in the Fabula Lunae stories.Role in the Story The crawler is more than a vehicle in Golf and Outgassing —it’s a character in itself. As Annie and Milton unload their experimental packages, the crawler becomes their lifeline, enabling them to set up oxygen-extraction tests and investigate the Apollo 14 ALSEP site. When ground control orders an evacuation, they abandon the crawler to race across the regolith to reach the lander, Steamboat. This tension heightens the stakes, turning a routine mission into a survival thriller. The crawler also symbolizes the Fabulae Lunae universe’s reliance on technology to overcome a post-Yellowstone world. Its presence ties into Annie’s leadership arc, showcasing her ability to adapt when the Moon presents its own set of challenges to the situation—a theme that resonates in Thunder Moon Tussle and the upcoming Mask of the Joyful Moon .Why the Crawler Matters This vehicle bridges science fiction and reality, offering a glimpse of lunar exploration’s future while questioning its foundations. For fans of hard sci-fi and space tech, the crawler’s role in Golf and Outgassing is a thrilling mix of innovation and vulnerability, reflecting both ambitions and its uncertainties.

Meet Annie MacInturner: The Lunar Trailblazer of Fabulae Lunae
Who Is Annie MacInturner? Annie MacInturner is no stranger to adversity. A former Marine with a decorated career, she transitioned to the space agencies astronaut corps, leveraging her military training and a sharp mind honed by years of tactical decision-making. In
Golf and Outgassing
, we meet her leading a mission to Fra Mauro, the Apollo 14 landing site, alongside rookie Milton Johnson. Tasked with deploying experiments and retrieving the Suprathermal Ion Detector Experiment (SIDE), Annie’s leadership shines as she navigates a sudden evacuation order triggered by live mortar rounds in the ALSEP seismograph—a forgotten relic of past missions. Her quick thinking saves the day, but the experience leaves a lasting mark, shaping her reflections years later.Beyond her professional prowess, Annie is a wife to Cy MacInturner, her Capcom support on Earth, and a figure of quiet strength. Her backstory hints at a childhood fascination with space, fueled by watching Space Shuttle missions whenever she could see them. This personal connection drives her commitment to preserving lunar history while pushing the boundaries of exploration.A Character Grounded in Science Drawing on my science and engineering background, Annie’s character reflects the realities of lunar missions. Her suit, designed for radiation shielding and mobility, mirrors concepts from NASA’s Artemis program, where astronauts will need to withstand solar storms and harsh regolith. The Fra Mauro mission’s focus on oxygen extraction experiments aligns with in-situ resource utilization (ISRU) research, a field I’ve studied closely. Yet, I’ve added layers of realism—like the unpredictability of legacy Apollo tech—to challenge the polished narratives often spun by space agencies and corporations like Lunadyne.Annie’s tactical approach also nods to real-world astronaut training. Her ability to assess risks, from skylight caves to unstable terrain, echoes the problem-solving skills taught at NASA’s Johnson Space Center. But her skepticism toward corporate agendas sets her apart, offering a critique of how modern lunar colonization might repeat historical oversights.Annie’s Journey in the Fabulae Lunae Universe Annie’s debut in
Golf and Outgassing
is just the beginning. Her arc embodies the Fabulae Lunae theme of survival and community, making her a relatable yet heroic figure in this post-apocalyptic Moon. Why Annie Resonates Annie MacInturner is more than a protagonist—she’s a symbol of human endurance. Her military background gives her an edge, but it’s her vulnerability—reflected in her bond with Cy and her reflections on past missions—that draws readers in. Whether she’s racing against time at Fra Mauro or pondering the cost of corporate influence, Annie embodies the spirit of exploration tempered by hard-earned wisdom. For fans of strong, science-driven characters, she’s a lunar icon in the making.

Exploring Fra Mauro
A Mission Rooted in Lunar History Golf and Outgassing transports readers to the Fra Mauro region, the landing site of Apollo 14, a nod to humanity’s early lunar triumphs. Annie, a Marine lieutenant colonel with years of spaceflight experience, leads Milton, an eager researcher, on a mission to deploy experimental packages, retrieve the Suprathermal Ion Detector Experiment (SIDE) from the Apollo 14 ALSEP, and investigate a potential skylight cave in Cone Crater. But when ground control orders an abrupt evacuation because of live mortar rounds in the ALSEP seismograph—a forgotten hazard from decades past—the duo must navigate treacherous terrain and personal stakes to return to their lander, Steamboat. Decades later, Annie reflects on the incident and its lasting impact, hinting at a legacy of personal resilience. This tale is more than an adventure; it’s a tribute to the astronauts who paved the way. The tension between preserving Apollo’s legacy and pursuing new science mirrors the delicate balance we face in today’s lunar ambitions. Science Meets Storytelling Using my background in science and engineering,
Golf and Outgassing
incorporates authentic lunar science. The Fra Mauro highlands, a geologically rich area studied by Apollo 14, are a plausible setting—its rugged terrain and potential water vapor detections (truly in the reports from the time but amplified here for drama) align with data from NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. The story’s focus on in situ resource utilization (ISRU), like the oxygen-extraction experiment, reflects current efforts by NASA’s Artemis program to harvest lunar resources for sustainable exploration. Even the skylight cave concept ties to genuine discoveries of lava tubes, which could harbor ice or volatiles—key to future colonies.Yet, I’ve added a twist with the live ALSEP mortars, a real hazard deployed in the fictional setting that underscores the unpredictability of legacy tech. This critique challenges the sanitized narratives often pushed by space agencies and corporations.Characters at the Heart of the Action Annie MacInturner: A no-nonsense leader, Annie’s military discipline and strategic mind shine as she balances mission goals with historical respect. Her later reflections reveal the emotional toll of lunar life.Milton Johnson: The rookie with a knack for research, Milton’s confidence and vulnerability grow through the mission. His journey continues in later stories, including
Thunder Moon Tussle
, where he evolves into a key figure.Cy MacInturner: Annie’s husband and Capcom, Cy’s support from Earth adds a human touch, contrasting with the mission’s tension.Nils Carmike: Though a minor presence here, Nils’s future prominence (e.g., in
CME
and
Thunder Moon Tussle
) hints at his role in the broader Fabulae Lunae saga. These characters embody the spirit of exploration, shaped by a world where a Yellowstone eruption has forced humanity to look to the Moon for survival.
Connections to the Fabulae Lunae Universe Golf and Outgassing is a cornerstone of the Fabulae Lunae universe, setting the stage for the adventures that unfold in my novel Thunder Moon Tussle , where Nils and Milton’s experiences deepen into a tale of smuggling and survival. The upcoming sequel, Mask of the Joyful Moon (set for December 2025), will further expand this world with new challenges and mysteries. This anthology offers a perfect entry point to trace the evolution of these characters and the lunar frontier they inhabit. Why Golf and Outgassing Resonates This story captures the thrill of lunar exploration while grounding it in the realities of radiation risks, resource scarcity, and corporate influence. Whether you’re drawn to the science of skylight caves or the drama of a race against time, Golf and Outgassing delivers. It’s a testament to the human spirit’s ability to adapt—and a reminder of the dangers lurking in space’s shadows.
