The Weight of the Wishing Stone by Kevin Cox
"A beautifully written, richly imagined fantasy that blends grief, destiny, and epic world-building. Selaina’s journey from the forest into a fractured world full of mystery and danger pulled me in right away.

I loved how the two storylines slowly inte" Read more of this review »

“Ambrielle stood out in the street for a while, looking up at all the stars in the sky. She reflected on the vastness of the universe, wondering where she fit into it, wondering where she even was in relation to Earth. Was she even in the same galaxy? What if it wasn’t the same galaxy? There were at least billions of them.”
J. Kevin Cox, Bewilderness

“As Ambrielle approached, there were gasps and loud murmurings among the audience as they got their first glimpse of a human. The floor they walked on was like polished mekkadium, smooth and glassy beneath Ambrielle’s sandals. Aradel walked to a place on the floor beside a circle of glowing vaeranite embedded into the marbled floor.”
J. Kevin Cox, Bewilderness

“There were things that began to roam about in the dark. They were called Nulthereals, the Whisperers. They seemed to be helping the curse. Many of the survivors called to them,” Sidaire said, “pleading with them to restore the plants. Several had simply given up hope they were so crippled by sadness and depression that no one was doing anything practical to try to solve the problem. Everyone stopped caring. The world began to fade into the desert you see now. Then sometime after that, villagers began to mysteriously go missing, one by one.”

“There were bright stars overhead and an orange glow around the horizon. The silhouettes of hanging frond trees made the realization sink in. Ambrielle was back in the oasis, the oasis in the middle of endless dunes and rock. The lonely desert wilderness she hoped to never see again.”

“Beyond the grassy field were hundreds of huge skyscrapers, pulsing and glowing with blue and violet lights. The architecture was like nothing she had ever known. The design of the building structures was extremely complex.
The buildings themselves were alive, moving in one way or another. Some structures had layers that rotated independently from the rest. There were other structures with large moving parts on the sides of the buildings or the roof, turning constantly. In some cases, entire buildings were moving. It was like they were all parts of a giant machine.”
