They are both complete in my eyes, though I have had ideas for other stories those books' characters could be the perfect containers for. I once attempted to set the lovers of Upstate in a tale of present-day activists, but something else took over. I would love to write another epistolary novel if inspired to it again. It was a very emotional and strong experience with writing. Many blessings, Kalisha(less)

Quotes by Kalisha Buckhanon  (?)

“At least when somebody's suffocating, you can tell: you see their faces turn blue, their lips quiver, their eyes buck, and their throats jerk. But when a man is mentally packing his bags the suitcase is never out until he's already standing on the other side of the door.”
Kalisha Buckhanon, Conception

“If Summer joined legions of other Black women trying to eek out concern for our lives and became a hashtag, then I would become open to scrutiny and intrusion my fragility couldn’t withstand.”
Kalisha Buckhanon, Speaking of Summer

Topics Mentioning This Author

“I love to see a young girl go out and grab the world by the lapels. Life's a bitch. You've got to go out and kick ass.”
maya angelou

“Make up a story... For our sake and yours forget your name in the street; tell us what the world has been to you in the dark places and in the light. Don't tell us what to believe, what to fear. Show us belief's wide skirt and the stitch that unravels fear's caul.”
Toni Morrison, The Nobel Lecture In Literature, 1993

“Sure you can do anything when talking or writing, it's not like living when you can only do what you doing.”
Sapphire "Push"

“Deliver me from writers who say the way they live doesn't matter. I'm not sure a bad person can write a good book. If art doesn't make us better, then what on earth is it for.”
Alice Walker

“We tell ourselves stories in order to live...We look for the sermon in the suicide, for the social or moral lesson in the murder of five. We interpret what we see, select the most workable of the multiple choices. We live entirely, especially if we are writers, by the imposition of a narrative line upon disparate images, by the "ideas" with which we have learned to freeze the shifting phantasmagoria which is our actual experience.”
Joan Didion, The White Album
