I've been asked about the title of my new poetry book. To most it seems as if the words 'beautiful' and 'heartbreak' are contradictory. How can pain and heartbreak possibly be pretty?
I do agree that while you're in that dark and hopeless place, where you see no end in sight; it isn't beautiful.
But what about what happens as a result of the pain?
It took years of being silenced for me to find my voice. It used to be a snowflake, now it is a blizzard.
I was molded into a perfect little doll for my abusers to play with, now I am beautifully messy. I don't fit in, I refuse to put myself in any narrow box. I live my life as me, free. It took years of being hurt by other people to develop a keen understanding of the human mind. Most of all, it took my whole life filled with trauma for me to publish my book. My heartbreak gave me art and I am grateful for that.
