Book / film comparisons are one of my favourite obsessions, so I enjoyed this entertaining dive into the subject. I've spent many, many hours reading books, watching the film adaptations, and writing about them in a long-running series of 'film of the book' blog posts and in a collection of essays I published, which makes me the ideal reader for this book.

With an irreverent, opinionated and friendly writing tone, the author explores films from a variety of genres, illustrating her points with quotes from authors, critics, producers and film dialogue. The book did seem a little on the short side, with many films given passing mentions and throwaway comments, so I would have liked it to be more detailed. It was an interesting read which discussed topics such as why Austen is adapted so often, whether certain books are really 'unfilmable' and the social values of the past which affected the adaptations. I did not always agree with the opinions; for example, I don't care that the Scouring of the Shire wasn't in the LOTR films and I think the book of The Exorcist was better than the film. Mostly I did agree; the Netflix version of Persuasion is dreadful, most adaptations of children's books aren't satisfactory, Daphne du Maurier's stories make great films, and Bram Stoker's Dracula is indeed terrible.

I was unfamiliar with some of the books and films, but it was sometimes interesting to learn about them even if I'll never read or watch them. I even learned of some films which few people realise were based on books. There was a last chapter on Christmas films, which I skimmed over because it wasn't exactly seasonal when I read it in July! In a book such as this one, the books and films examined are personal preference, so I appreciated that the author chose the material she had the strongest feelings about. This means that many famous great film adaptations, and many bad ones, do not get a mention. In summary, if you're a 'film of the book' obsessive, you'll enjoy this! ...more

A gently dystopian novel which explores what it is to be human in an increasingly automated society, this wonderful tale is set in the near-future and owes a debt to Thomas M Disch's story 'The Brave Little Toaster: A Bedtime Story for Small Appliances' (set in 1976, published in 1980). There are some similarities between these simply told stories, most notably the resourceful and optimistic main character who sacrifices herself to save her humans. However, Disch's story is a commentary on consumer society and a study in existential anxiety with its constant questioning of purpose and fear of obsolescence. Dixon's story has the appliances considering what happiness is and whether they can rebel against the system, while the humans cling on to books, music and memories in the face of their eventual extinction.

The novel is told in the third person and follows Scout, a sentient vacuum cleaner who names herself after the character in To Kill A Mockingbird. Other appliances include the Fridge, Clock, Auto (self-driving car) and Watch (which controls the smart house). They serve a retired couple, Harold and Edie. When Edie passes away and Harold is plunged into grief, the controller of everything ('the Grid') is going to remove the most precious of his belongings and move him out of the house. His daughter Kate, a computer expert who is still paying the price for a rebellious action years ago, won't let that happen. Kate, Scout and Adrian (a piano-playing boy who used to be Edie's student) will do anything they can to keep Harold in his home with his valuable books.

I liked this story very much, even though it has many unanswered questions. When it's on this small a scale, you can't expect the complete downfall of the system, but there are people who live outside of the Grid. I would have liked more links between Harold's books and the story. The Catcher in the Rye is mentioned frequently as one of his treasured books but there is no discussion of its content. I also thought that Harold was portrayed as very elderly at the age of sixty-eight. I know that people are longer-lived even in our time, but perhaps in the near-future controlled by the Grid, the reverse could be true and the automated boredom of life ages them!

In summary, a recommended read. It's not that weird a book, I've read much stranger ones. It will definitely make you think. ...more

This is a great read which brings us 'One Step Closer' to one of the best bands of this millennium, Linkin Park. I turned the pages so quickly I was in danger of getting a 'Papercut'. The author made so many excellent 'Points [of Authority]' and had some interesting takes which I couldn't have thought up 'By Myself'. OK, I'm 'Breaking the Habit' now of stuffing song titles into the review...

I had my eye on this book for a while, ever since I caught up with Linkin Park's back catalogue after being impressed with their comeback album From Zero. The book was written in late 2023, I think, so it didn't go that far. Although the majority of information and quotes in the book can be found elsewhere, if you trawl through a lot of articles, videos etc, it's well put-together into a cohesive look at the band's origins, rise to fame, chart success and influence. What I thought was most valuable, however, was the author's twin perspectives of music critic and fan. His descriptions of the music are very effective and he provides valuable context on topics such as rock styles, chart trends, changes in music consumption and mental health representation in music. With his other hat on (perhaps an LP baseball cap?) he is around the same age as me and was a young teen when Hybrid Theory came out. He critiques the music of Linkin Park and the band members' side projects in a way that you know he's a fan.

The book has a particular focus on the band's early career; halfway through, we've only reached the second album, Meteora. I would have liked more space given to the later albums too, more descriptions of the shows, and more about the band members other than Mike and Chester (to be fair, as the vocalists and biggest personalities they were always going to have more attention). The author discusses a handful of songs in more detail, which are most significant in LP's career. However, I liked that he put his personal views in there too. He wants justice for A Thousand Suns, the nuclear-themed electronic album which is bold and genius but not critically appreciated enough at the time. He thinks the video for 'One Step Closer' is embarrassingly silly, but doesn't he realise it's iconic, floating monks and all? He considers that Out of Ashes, the album from Chester's band Dead by Sunrise, wasn't as successful as it deserved to be, overshadowed by the LP single 'New Divide' (it's a great song, but he's right, the sound is too safe). He also makes fair assessments on One More Light, the band's last album (at the time he was writing), with its change in direction from heavy rock, to expertly-crafted radio-friendly pop which baffled both fans and critics. The last few chapters of the book are devoted to the memorial concert, tributes and the legacy of the band. There is a small section of black and white photos.

There are a few oddities about the book. In one chapter, Brad plays the trumpet at school, but in the next, it was the trombone! There are some 'interludes' taken from interviews with other musicians but mostly I don't think they add much. Further appraisal of the music videos, in which Mr Hahn had a major role, would have been welcome. The tone of the book is possibly a little too professional, or sanitised, I'm not sure how to describe it. The strong focus on chart performance and quotes from serious interviews about the music-making process don't leave much room for anecdotes which would bring more colour to the narrative. However, these are minor criticisms and I thought it was a very well-written read which, although preaching to the converted, emphasises the talent and influence of Linkin Park in the context of the 2000s, music trends and popular culture.

'In the End,' this book was definitely worth reading. It's 'Crawling' on to my list of top reads this year. I may have 'Lost' the plot somewhat on this review, so I'm saying 'Good Goodbye'. ...more
