A Honeymoon of Grave Consequence Enters the Wide World At Last

It’s here, hooray! You can find the ebook of A Honeymoon of Grave Consequence absolutely everywhere now, and you’ll find the paperback at more and more shops over the next few days. (It’s already available on Amazon, but I chose the “expanded distribution” option, so it will filter out through the distribution network!)

See all the buy-links here.

And reviewers have continued to say really lovely things about it! Here’s a roundup of some of them:

I had so much fun writing this second adventure for Lady & Lord Riven. Thank you to everyone who asked for more! And look how pretty the two books are together:

Scoop up A Honeymoon of Grave Consequence for yourself now.

Once you’ve read it, if you have the time/energy to leave even a one-line, honest review on any retailer’s site, I’d be incredibly grateful! Reviews make such a difference in visibility.

Happy book two birthday to Lady & Lord Riven!

A Honeymoon of Grave Consequence on Patreon

Hooray! A Honeymoon of Grave Consequence, book 2 in my tea-and-vampires series of novellas (The Unexpected Adventures of Lady & Lord Riven), is out now on my Patreon. Subscribe at the Dragon Ruler level to download your copy of the ebook today!

Alternately, you can preorder it from any online bookstore for (the special advance price of) $2.99/£2.49 to have the ebook delivered to your e-reader on September 29th, in just over 3 weeks.

The first reviews have already started to come in, and they’re really lovely!

Books & Traveling with Lynn called it “Deliciously, Outrageously Cosy and Romantic.”

Sil from The Book Voyagers described it as “The honeymoon of your dreams inside an inn filled with supernatural creatures, a vampire, a snarky scholar, and a legendary magical item.”

Author Catie Murphy called it “Absolutely charming.”

And author Marissa Lingen called it “A sweet, fun adventure with themes of acceptance. It’s perfect for days when a little smidge of escapism is just what you need.”

Whenever/wherever you read it, I hope you’ll enjoy sinking into Lady & Lord Riven’s latest supernatural adventure!

(And of course, if you haven’t yet read their first adventure, A Marriage of Undead Inconvenience, you can snap that up now in ebook or paperback.)

Covers and Updates Galore

Hooray, I have covers to share! First, the gorgeous UK cover for Enchanting the Fae Queen, with art by Jessica Cruickshank:

[image error]UK cover art by Jessica Cruickshank

Isn’t it fabulous? You can preorder that UK edition now and/or preorder the equally gorgeous (but very different!) US edition, too. They’ll both come out in the last week of January, 2026, a few weeks earlier than originally planned, which I am thrilled about.

I’m also excited because I’ve just (today!) found out that US advance reading copies have already been printed, and 5 of them are currently on the way to my house in Wales. I cannot wait to hold them in my hands as soon as I return from our current trip to Canada! And then, of course, I will hold a giveaway for all of my newsletter subscribers.

Make sure you sign up to my newsletter to be eligible when that happens!

And in the meantime, check out the wonderful cover for A Honeymoon of Grave Consequence, designed by Artscandare:

[image error]Cover design by Artscandare

This is the second cozy-spooky romantasy novella in the Unexpected Adventures of Lady and Lord Riven (following A Marriage of Undead Inconvenience). It’s more than twice the length of the first adventure (36,000 words instead of 17,000), because this one is set in an inn full of supernatural creatures, so there are many more characters and storylines involved! I had so much fun writing it; I hope you’ll have fun reading it, too.

Because of the increased length, the price of this one will rise to $3.99/£2.99 once it’s out in the world, but you can preorder it now from any online bookstore to get the special preorder offer of $2.99/£2.49.

Alternately, you can subscribe to my Patreon at the Dragon Ruler level or above to get your copy of the ebook at least two weeks before the rest of the world (and also scoop up all the other free ebooks available there to Dragon Ruler subscribers).

I’m almost finished with the structural edits to this novella, and I’m planning to send it out for copyedits next week, so I expect to publish the ebook on Patreon in early September and everywhere else by the end of September at the latest. I hope to have the paperback edition ready to go by the end of September as well, but I won’t be able to confirm that until closer to the date. Knock on wood!

For now, enjoy the jacket copy:

Margaret, Lady Riven, never expected to find herself married, much less enjoying a honeymoon with her vampiric husband. Obviously, they’ve only agreed to stay married for logical, practical reasons, but Lord Riven has kept his promise to supply her with excellent tea and even better company as they travel together across the continent. Unfortunately, her newfound notoriety has traveled along with them – so she’s delighted when they arrive at a secluded inn deep within the Black Forest, far from high society.

However, the inn is full of lethal supernatural creatures who find Margaret’s arrival anything but welcome—and for all of Margaret’s academic prowess, she’s infamously inept at making friends. When a new threat appears in her own mirror, she realizes that the greatest danger is to her heart…and she’ll have to rely on a remarkable assortment of newfound allies to help her save the immortal vampire who holds it.

A sparkling sequel to A Marriage of Undead Inconvenience that includes strong tea, light banter, and an introvert learning that she can find true community and acceptance after all.

Writing Updates and a New Short Story

Hello! I’m waving from my (metaphorical) writing desk,* where – now that I’ve finished all of my book-promo travel for the time being (and having met so many great readers and writers along the way!) – I’ve turned in the first-pass pages for Enchanting the Fae Queen. Now, I’m head-down in drafting mode on two different projects:

Melting the Ice Queen (book 3 in the Queens of Villainy romantasy trilogy, due to my editor in January 2026 and due to be published in either late 2026 or early 2027)

and

A Honeymoon of Grave Consequence (the second cozy-spooky romantasy novella in The Unexpected Adventures of Lady and Lord Riven series, following A Marriage of Undead Inconvenience and due to be published sometime this autumn).

Obviously, you can preorder both Enchanting the Fae Queen and A Honeymoon of Grave Consequence now…

But you don’t have to wait to read my latest short story, a frothy sapphic fantasy rom-com called “Five Reasons Why I Am Absolutely Not in Love with My Nemesis,” which has now been published in the June 2025 issue of Worlds of Possibility. I had a lot of fun playing with this particular fairy tale setup for the first time! I hope you’ll enjoy it, too.

And now, back to my writing!

__

* I actually do most of my writing either lying propped up on pillows in bed or sitting at our family’s dining table. But that sounds far less professional, right? Oh, well. ;)

An Apology and a Free Novella

This is a public note offering my deepest apologies to anyone who preordered A Honeymoon of Grave Consequence (#2 in the Unexpected Adventures of Lady and Lord Riven) from Kobo. Due to a tech issue, the publication date, which was meant to be set to November 25th, was accidentally set to March 14: today.

*facepalm*

(To be clear, this novella has not yet been written, much yet uploaded for publication!)

If your preorder was caught up in this mess, you should be able to get a full refund from Kobo (if that refund hasn’t already come through, which it may well have – I found out about this issue through Kobo, so they’re certainly aware of the issue). Also, though, please do let me know through my contact form so I can offer you an early copy as soon as the novella IS ready, as an apology for the frustration.

And in the meantime, for one day only, I’d like to offer absolutely everyone a free copy of the first novella in this series, A Marriage of Undead Inconvenience. Enjoy!

(Now I’m going to go drink some consolatory tea, because oof. This was a genuinely horrifying discovery to make at the end of the week!)

Mail-Order Magic

Hurrah! I have a new cozy fantasy short story out now at one of my favorite magazines, The Sunday Morning Transport, and you can read it right now for free: “Mail-Order Magic“.

This is the first story I’ve ever written about any character with ME/CFS, almost 20 years after my own diagnosis…and it also includes a touch of romance and unexpected griffins. ;) Enjoy!

PS: This story is completely free to read online, but if you’d like to read more of the stories behind the paywall at The Sunday Morning Transport (including my own “Yours, Wickedly“), you can use this link to snap up a free 60-day subscription!

Personally, I am a subscriber, and I love reading new stories in my email inbox every Sunday!

And I hope to see any Yorkshire readers at my upcoming event in Leeds this coming Tuesday. :)

Wooing the Witch Queen

…is out in North America today and coming in the UK on Thursday, with Australia following close behind next Tuesday! I’m so happy to finally be able to share this world and these characters with you.

Locus Magazine said (in a review that made me incredibly happy), “This novel is incredibly fun…The aesthetics are delightful, too. Blazing skulls, a witch queen with a crown of [bones] attended by a cloud of crows – honestly, I had so much fun reading Wooing the Witch Queen that I can hardly wait for Burgis’s next novel in this setting..”

Publishers Weekly said “Burgis keeps the pages flying while impressively balancing political intrigue, slow-burning romance, and comic relief. Readers will be enchanted.”

Library Journal said, “Witty dialogue, a slow-burn romance, and secrets keep this story moving at a steady clip… VERDICT Burgis’s (Claws and Contrivances) clever romantasy is ideal for readers of Travis Baldree and Freya Marske.”

Snap up your copy now! And if you get a chance to write an honest review of it on Amazon or any other big book site (no matter where you’ve bought the book), I would appreciate it so much. Even one line is enough – and reviews make a huge difference with visibility.

Most of all, though, I just really hope that you’ll enjoy it!

2024 Wrap-Up: My Year in Writing

Here we go!

In 2024, I finished drafting Wooing the Witch Queen (the first book in my Queens of Villainy trilogy) and then edited it under the guidance of my wonderful editor, Erika Tsang. I wrote two fun little ‘extras’ for it, too, one for its upcoming Bookish Box edition (coming in March 2025!) and one for…something I can’t tell you yet! (But I WILL tell you in 2025, I swear.)

I also wrote a flash fiction story, “So, Your Child Turned Out to Be a Phoenix,” which was published this June in the online magazine Worlds of Possibility (and then republished as an ebook for my Patreon Dragon Ruler subscribers this month).

I wrote a new spooky-cozy rom-com novella, A Marriage of Undead Inconvenience, which came out in August – and my patrons on Patreon have voted for it to become the first in a series: the Unexpected Adventures of Lady and Lord Riven!

I’m midway through writing a new short story on commission for a really cool magazine, and I’m hoping to see that published in not too long…

And I am SO CLOSE to finishing the first draft of Enchanting the Fae Queen, book 2 in my Queens of Villainy trilogy. Only 9,000 words to go! I’m planning to submit this to Erika in January, and I can’t wait to write the joyful ending.

(Insert the “avert!” sign here, please, to hold off all rounds of family illness, crises, etc. I loooooove these characters and their story, and I can’t wait to share!)

Coming up to 2025, I can’t wait to finally bring my wicked witch queen and her sweet, cinnamon roll librarian (slash secret Archduke in disguise) into the world in February. (You can preorder Wooing the Witch Queen now!)

I’ll be editing Enchanting the Fae Queen once it’s finished and also writing most of Melting the Ice Queen (Book 3 in the trilogy!) across the year for my January 31st, 2026 deadline.

And I’ll be writing the second novella in the Lady and Lord Riven series of scholarly & supernatural adventures, too: A Honeymoon of Grave Consequence is available to preorder! (But please ignore the pub date on its retailer page. I truly doubt that it will actually take that long to put it out!)

Here’s to a 2025 full of good stories and characters we love.
