Hi all! I have been seeing this question ("What time period does The Son of Mara take place in?") asked frequently by people who have read The Son of Mara, and people who are interested in reading it. To put matters to rest, SOM is set in a nondescript time period! I had fun mixing elements from different eras (Victorian, Gothic, Classical Age, etc.) and decided putting a specific date on the story would ground the reader from that otherworldly feeling I wanted them to have. Similarly, I would have had to take into account actual history. Since the story is set in France, I would have to acknowledge the fact that the country would most likely still be recovering from the French Revolution around the date I would place it in time. Talk about a way to drag you away from the magic!
