Ryan lives in Los Angeles with his dog, Butters (and his wife and human child).

He studied creative writing in New Mexico and engineering in California. He grew up moving a lot. He has worked in several unrelated fields, including tax collection, car sales, automotive aftermarket performance, and infrastructure.

His one celebrity sighting while living in Los Angeles was Stephen Hawking. Professor Hawking was at Caltech. Ryan walked about 4 or 5 feet behind him too scared and intimidated to say anything to probably the smartest guy alive at the time.

He thought he saw Larry David once at the Whole Foods in Brentwood, but it was just some old bald guy.

I realized I'd be completely unprepared. Maybe I remember--and can plan for--the major events, but would I be able to survive day to day? It was that idea that got me started. (less)

I recently lost my German Shepherd, Cartman, to degenerative myelopathy. I had never heard of it, but in a 6 month period he went from jumping up to grab food off the counter to being in a doggie wheelchair. Prior to him losing the ability to walk, I lost many loaves of bread, pork tenderloins, ribs, and other foods.

I never thought about death as much as when Cartman passed. What happens when we Read more of this blog post »

“In real life, as during a rerun following a timequake, people don’t change, don’t learn anything from their mistakes, and don’t apologize. In a short story they have to do at least two out of three of those things,”
