Shea Hulse writes dark Celtic fantasy romance rooted in real Irish mythology — the kind with ancient druids, wrongly-accused heroes, and heroines who refuse to be saved.

Her Dragon Fire & Druids series and Celtic Romance series blend Irish folklore with emotionally-charged romantic tension. Think forbidden love with actual mythological stakes. Her books have been described as "impossible to put down" and "the romantasy series I didn't know I needed."

Shea is also the founder of The Romantasy Writers Coven, an async community for writers building dark fantasy romance. She teaches the craft without the camera, because good writing doesn't require a ring light.

She lives in the United States and writes in stolen moments, parking lots, and the sus

If I can't move forward, it's because I don't actually know what the scene needs to cost someone. I go back one scene, find where the tension went soft, and fix that. The block almost always lifts.

If it's genuinely a bad brain day, I write the scene I've been looking forward to, the one I already know how to write. Permission to write the middle of the book first is underrated.(less)

I write dark Celtic fantasy romance, which means I have a legitimate professional reason to spend three hours reading about Irish vampire folklore at midnight. The abhartach predates Dracula by 1,500 years. That's not trivia — that's a plot device. The best part of being a writer is the excuse to go very deep into very strange things and call it work. AND call romance novels research...tell my husband I'm working while I devour a romance series. (less)

Fated Mates Romance Trope: How to Write Destiny Without the Shortcuts

The fated mates trope is one of the most searched romance tropes in the genre — and one of the most frequently misused.

Done badly, fated mates is a shortcut. It removes the need to develop the relationship because the relationship is mandated. The characters don’t fall in love. They discover they are already in love because the universe says so. The romance isn’t built. It’s installed.

Done well, f

Shea Hulse answered Goodreads's question: Shea Hulse
Irish mythology does most of the heavy lifting. The folklore is genuinely stranger and darker than anything I could invent — ancient kings who were shapeshifters, battles fought with satire instead of swords, gods who kept coming back after dying. I See Full Answer
