Ruth F. Stevens likes to create stories that will make you laugh and cry, as she did with her debut novel, Stage Seven. She has a duology of funny-sad contemporary novels from Black Rose Writing: My Year of Casual Acquaintances (Sept. 2024) and The Unexpected Guests (Dec. 2024).

Ruth says: “I find myself motivated to write about the topics that worry me the most. Since I worry about a great many things, there is never a shortage of material. I’m also a big believer in the power of laughter to ease our pain and anxiety. Humor is a component in anything I write, no matter how serious the subject matter.”

A former public relations professional, Ruth has been writing for her entire career—including hundreds of articles for magazines, newspapers,

Don’t do what I did: I put off trying my hand at creative writing until I retired from my day job in public relations and advertising. Eager to make up for lost time, I’ve written two plays and three novels since then. It’s been fun (well, sometimes) and rewarding, but I wish now that I hadn’t delayed the process for so many years. These shared recollections were what inspired me to write a stage play and later my debut novel titled Stage Seven.

Stage Seven depicts how characters from three generations cope with Alzheimer’s, giving it resonance to people of all ages. Though the book tackles a difficult topic, I’ve included comic and romantic elements to lighten the tone. I hope the story can help readers learn more about this disease and try to regard it with a perspective that is bittersweet rather than bitter. With about six million cases of Alzheimer’s in the U.S., it’s a subject that unfortunately is relevant to far too many people today.

Literary Luncheon

I'm honored to be one of the featured authors at “Between the Covers…a Literary Luncheon” on October 20 at the Palos Verdes Golf Club, Palos Verdes Estates, California. I’ll be joined by four other local authors – Dr. Marilou Ryder, Rebecca Forster, Wendell Thomas, and host James T. Bartlett – in an informal book chat over a catered three-course luncheon.

The event is a fundraiser hosted by Las Ca Read more of this blog post »

This was an entertaining read--suspenseful and well-crafted. But it seemed a bit too familiar; and the main character was unsympathetic right out of the gate, which is always a negative for me.

"Hick lit" is not really my thing, but I was surprised by how much I liked this coming-of-age story about a young sheep farmer. The writing was gorgeous, the story moving and emotional without falling into sentimentality. An impressive debut! ...more
