“There is a town at the edge of things where women hold in their screams. They die young: high blood pressure, heart attacks, strokes, cancer. The girls watch their mothers and grandmothers and aunts play Ring Around the Rosie, ashes, ashes, they all fall into graves where no one will ever see them again.”
Chelsea Stickle, Everything's Changing

“I’m sorry to report that if you can hear me, you’re dead. Such a shame. But don’t worry. We’ll help you adjust.”
Chelsea Stickle, Everything's Changing

“It’s like she stepped out of the car and walked until she reached something. The sea air with her toes enmeshed in wet sand. A cave that echoed so she could finally hear herself. The quiet solitude of the dwarfing Redwood forest with trunks the size of cars. The past smaller than a speck behind her.”
Chelsea Stickle, Breaking Points

“When something catches your attention just keep your attention on it, stick with it ’til the end, and somewhere along the line there’ll be weirdness.”
Helen Oyeyemi, Boy, Snow, Bird

“Who gets to speak and why?, I wrote last week, is the only question.”
Chris Kraus, I Love Dick

“Why do people think that we’re degraded when we’re examining positions of degradation, or examining the cycle of our own degradation?”
Chris Kraus, I Love Dick

“How someone wants to explain catastrophe isn't important--that's what I know now. When shit happens, it doesn't really matter what asshole is responsible.”
Catherine Lacey, The Answers

“Friendship, as far as I'm concerned, is a delicate and rare thing that's built up over time and is predicated on mutual trust, mutual respect, reciprocal interests and share commitments. It's a relation that ultimately is lived out, at least as if it were chosen not taken for granted or assumed in advance. It's something that has to be renegotiated at every step, not demanded unconditionally.”
Chris Kraus, I Love Dick
