“مهم ترین تفاوت بین هنر شمال و جنوب اروپا این بود که نقاشان شمال اروپا به اندازه ی ایتالیایی ها به موضوع های مذهبی و اسطوره ای علاقه نشان نمی دادند ( البته، در ابتدای این دوره، این موضوع ها در هر دو منطقه رایج بودند). در عوض، نقاشان شمال اروپا بیشتر به کشیدن صحنه های زندگی روزمره علاقه داشتند. به این نوع نقاشی ها «صحنه های ژانر» یا «هنر ژانر» می گویند. این آثار به ما نشان می دهند که کردم عادی آن زمان چطور زندگی می کردند و می توانیم در آن ها تصاویری از خانه ها، مناظر طبیعی، بازارها و روابط بین مردم را ببینیم.”
