Rawalpindi is a city in the province of Punjab in present-day Pakistan. In 1949, the year of my birth, my father was working as an officer in the Pakistan Military. Both my parents came from North-Western Pakistan and were Pukhtoons. I grew up on military bases and moved frequently when my father was transferred from base to base. My parents finally decided to put me in a boarding school so my studies would not be interrupted frequently. My mother chose the elite Burn Hall School in Abbottabad, in the Northwest mountains. At that time the school was run by catholic European and had a very good reputation, so there were students there who came from all over the world.
