Buy the weird house anyway
Sarah’s List will be available in a couple of days, making it the fourth release in my almost six-month publishing career. The journey is one of those that seems like years and a blink all at the same time. What is the most important thing I have learned from this experience? If you love it, buy the weird house anyway.
Huh?
In my experience, real estate people steer you away from buying the odd house. You know, the one with the strange stairway or the out-of-the-ordinary roof. The logic? “It will never sell. People don’t want that kind of thing”. But if you love it, someone else will as well, especially if it is the odd thing that you love about the house. I would say that you will make more money selling something special to someone who loves it rather than something architecturally beige to Tom, Dick, or Harry.
What does this have to do with my writing journey? It turns out that my writing is the odd house. It’s not beige, and it doesn’t live and die by any given trope. But it works for the odd, quirky reader who loves the stories and characters I write and the words I use to bring them to life. They love it. It’s their reviews that warm my heart and fuel my writing. Would l love for everyone to love everything I write? Sure. But am I going to change my writing to chase them? Nope. I’ll stick with my weird house. It may take me a while to find my people, but they are out there. I’m sure of it.
If any of you are in the market for such a thing, I know where you can find a few.
