Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

A few years ago when I first came up with the idea for this book, there was a lady 50 something years who attended our church. She was very sweet but had some sort of cognitive disorder. She had a job, a car, and was so nice and of course our church (including myself) was happy to have her attend.

Months went by and one day around Christmas her grown daughter came with her to church. Her daughter was completely normal without any cognitive disability which is very typical genetically.

Having worked as both teacher and youth minister, it struck me as something that would be such a fascinating dynamic growing up. If you were a teen in a single parent house with a parent with a cognitive disability what would you feel? What would "normal" be like? And at what age would you figure out you were "smarter" than your parent?

From that day on I felt like God wanted me to put this story into print.

If I were writing a review based on how excellent a setting could be written, it would be 5 stars. Really that is the most charming thing about the book. That the mostly deserted Irish island is almost like another character; haunting and foreboding. ...more
