I seldom read books set in Colonial America, but I was thoroughly hooked by The Heretic's Daughter by Kathleen Kent. Like so many people, I have always been fascinated by that dark period in American history, The Salem Witch trials. Although this is a work of fiction, it is based on the author's own family history. Her ancestor, Martha Carrier, was one of the women hanged for being a witch. The story is told through the eyes of her daughter. The historical detail is vivid, presenting a hard and uncompromising look at life in colonial Massachusetts, as well as the suffering endured by both the accused and their families caught up in the witchcraft hysteria.
I also read the prequel, Wolves of Andover. While it is not necessary to read the books in order, I would recommend doing so.
