Prologue The Last of the Kitsune

Akira could not tell you when her first breath of life was taken, or when her first sip of fresh water was enjoyed. She could not tell you this because that was the problem with being immortal. You had so many memories, so many moments lived, and they all eventually faded away. They blurred out.

The mind was not forever.

But there was one memory that would never leave her, and that was the day that the rest of the kitsune guardians gave up. They said she was wrong to see beauty in which there was none. They told her that her judgement had become clouded, and for that she was left behind.

Maybe, she thought, maybe she should have given up, too.

Maybe the Kitsune Guild was right that day so many years ago. The Earth, despite her near millennia of protecting it, was now broken. Akira knew it. She could see it every day as she glided through the clouds.

But the thing was…she didn’t have the abilities to turn away from them back then, and she still didn’t now.

Behind the shield of her magic, sitting within her cavern on the top of Mount Kyriaso, she could see the hunter on the other side of the crystal clear wall of light. Dressed in all sorts of leather attire, she knew that many souls had died to clothe him. Down his back was a cloak that looked to be made of a wolf’s pelt, or several. It dragged behind the man who’s gut sagged and smelled strongly of alcohol. In his hand, he carried a sabre blade.

Akira grimaced.

Humankind was ugly. Everything about them seemed to cause her nose to twitch in disgust. They were putrid with hate and deceit. They killed one another over something as little as money, and cared nothing for the nightmares that they bestowed on their own younglings. They spared few moments wondering about those of their kind without food or shelter, and this was even more noticeable if they were one’s outside of their species or even just their own race.

Why did Akira feel this strange attraction towards those of humanity? Why couldn’t she turn her back on them like her brothers and sisters had? Was there really anything that could be said for a group of beings who could not even get along amongst themselves?

Akira gave a sigh before turning to disappear back into the confines of her cave.

She felt she might never understand.
