Talk Like a Pirate Day
Ahoy, me hearties! Tomorrow (September 19th) be Talk Like a Pirate Day. Aye, ye heard that right. There be an official holiday where ye get to talk like a pirate.
So what better way to celebrate than by talkin' about me own girl, Cap'n Bonnie Febland? Sure, an' I may be writin' about other characters now, but I've still got a special place in me heart for her. After all, she's got many o' the qualities I'd like to see in meself. Fearlessness, truth, an' a sense o' justice an' fair play. I tell ye, lads, I'd join aboard her ship if'n I could.
But in a way I can, an' ye can too! Aye, I'm talkin' about me book, The Treasure Beyond . If'n ye've never read me books afore, 'tis a good place to start. There be sea battles, storms, an' some fights o' the most swashbucklin' kind on the seven seas! Aye, me hearties, get yer hands on this treasure chest an' enjoy the gold inside - it'll get the wind in yer hair, an' the sea blood runnin' in yer veins.
(Now, then, where'd I put me trusty spyglass . . .)

The Magic of Coffee

Coffee. It's an author thing. For what reason, I don't know. Maybe because we're often insomniacs who need to augment our 5-ish hours of sleep with a jolt of caffeine. Maybe it's the smell, or the presence of a hot drink, that boosts our creativity. For whatever reason, it seems coffee and authors (and cats!) always go together.
(Disclaimer: not all authors like coffee. Here's a shout-out to Jaye L. Knight, Given Hoffman, and my soon-to-be-published friend Ari, who prefers tea.)
But for me, there's magic - and inspiration - in a cup of coffee. A warm drink is awfully soothing and cozy. And it can provide you with story ideas. A few months ago, I did a lot of research on coffee production for an upcoming fantasy novel. (Did I just say COFFEE and FANTASY in the same breath? Yes I did.) It was really fascinating, how much goes into your average cup of joe.
So what do you like to have with your coffee? A croissant sandwich, apple-cider donuts, or gingersnap cookies? (That's what I had this morning, and boy, was it good.) And what's your favorite hot drink? Tell me in the comments below!
