Christopher Neal is a journalist and communications professional. He was a freelance correspondent in Central and South America in the 1980s, and also a reporter for the Montreal Gazette and Ottawa Citizen. He managed media relations for the World Bank’s Latin America and Caribbean department, and earned a Masters of International Policy and Practice (MIPP) from George Washington University. A dual citizen of the United States and Canada, Neal lives in Montreal.

In the course of reading to understand the history, I came upon the story of Carleton Beals, a US journalist who interviewed Augusto Sandino in 1928, then fighting 3000 US marines occupying Nicaragua. As I read more of Beals's work, I found it not only entertaining and illuminating, but also useful guidance on how US-Latin America relations evolved through his life and coverage of Mexico, Cuba, Peru and the region as a whole. So I decided to tell his story and show why it matters. He was critical of US policy, prescient and well-informed, with a legacy that needs to be recognized.(less)
