Watering the Soul: Review

Watering the Soul by Courtney Peppernell This book was at times uplifting and had quite a few gems but overall, repetitive and undiscerning.

If you need gentle reminders of kindness and perseverance, then there are some beautiful messages in these poems. I quite liked the imagery of the universe and all its contents, however, it doesn’t seem to develop further than words on a page.

I have read quite of few of Peppernell’s collections and they all seem to get progressively repetitive. I felt like I was just reading the same poem over and over again. They just lacked the depth they desperately needed.

The illustrations throughout the book were absolutely gorgeous and ethereal. I just wish her poetry emulated that same feeling.

Normal People - Review

the characters in this book are so well thought out and complex, that your investment is not necessarily in the plot or narrative but in the characters themselves. their perceptions on life, love and themselves were incredibly eye-opening and at times complicated. it invites the reader to consider themselves and the relationships they build. the ending lacked some form of gratification but given the complexities of the novel, it makes sense to the characters and their stories, however, I would’ve liked to have seen some more character growth leading up to the final chapter. however great the protogagonists, the secondary characters lacked the same depth, especially Marianne’s family. given the circumstances of the novel, these characters could have definitely been more flushed out. the same critique goes for Connell’s struggles at the end, which could’ve been delved deeper into. overall, the novel was incredibly raw, real, complicated and heartbreaking, and I would definitely recommend a read!
