It occurred to me one day while driving the winding coastal highway during a torrential downpour that I always imagined the quake striking in the best of scenarios: I'm at home during a warm summer day with my family around me. My mind began running through all the scenarios I hadn't imagined: being far away from home, terrible weather, alone. From there, the story of Martha came to me over weeks of imagining the aftermath of the worst possible scenario rather than the best. (less)
