From the very beginning we meet This book continues the Walsh sisters series, this time focusing on Rachel, a character we didn’t get to know very well in the first book. Rachel is in her late twenties, an Irish girl living the party life in New York.

From the very beginning we meet two important people in her life, both Irish as well: her roommate Bridgit and her “no-boyfriend boyfriend” Luke.

Bridgit was a 50/50 character for me. Sometimes she felt like a genuine friend, but other times she seemed fake as hell. I honestly couldn’t decide whether I liked her or not.

Luke, on the other hand, was a 10/10. An absolute snack of a man. Rachel really put this guy through hell and humiliation, yet he remained completely devoted to her… at least until things reached their breaking point.

Rachel’s biggest problem is drugs — lots of them. After accidentally overdosing, she wakes up in the hospital, and her sister Margaret brings her back to Dublin so she can attend rehab called Cloisters. Rachel still seems to be high, because she initially imagines these weeks in rehab as something like a spa retreat.

As the story progresses, we slowly start to understand just how serious her addiction actually was. We also meet many other patients, each struggling with their own addictions and problems. Through these interactions, Rachel gradually begins to realize that there really might be something seriously wrong with her.

Throughout much of the book, however, I found Rachel quite frustrating. At times she felt extremely immature and seemed to move backwards in her growth rather than forward. I understand that addiction can make people behave terribly, but Rachel’s constant tendency to blame everyone else instead of taking responsibility became exhausting after a while.

Eventually Rachel does start to improve. She begins to see her behavior more clearly, confronts her mother, and leaves Cloisters — only to relapse just two days later. After being hit by a car and nearly dying (again), she finally reaches a turning point. She starts attending meetings for recovering addicts and slowly begins to rebuild her life.

A year later she returns to New York to see Luke and apologize — the least she feels she can do after everything. Only then does she finally realize that she loved him all along, even though she treated him terribly. Luke, being the incredibly kind man he is, still loves her and cannot seem to let her go. Personally, I’m not sure Rachel deserved that level of devotion, since she had already been given so many chances to change.

The story ends with an epilogue where Luke tells Rachel he still loves her and possibly even proposes to her.

What I felt the book was missing was a deeper look at Rachel’s life after Cloisters. Yes, we hear about what she did during that year and how she improved, but we don’t really see her internal struggles in detail. After her relapse, it almost feels like things suddenly become easier for her, which didn’t feel entirely realistic. Recovery from addiction is rarely that simple.

Another thing was that the story sometimes focused too much on side conflicts between other patients — like arguments about chocolate bars — instead of exploring Rachel’s inner battle more deeply. Overall, it was still an interesting and engaging story, but I felt it lacked a stronger exploration of Rachel’s internal fight with herself during recovery. ...more

The first chapters felt very informative to me. I also don’t enjoy reading in third person, so maybe that’s why every line felt monotonous and emotionless.

Right, I’m not even sure how to begin this without sounding too harsh. I’ve seen Emily Henry’s books everywhere on social media ever since she went viral on TikTok. I’ve seen Emily Henry’s books everywhere on social media ever since she went viral on TikTok. So, when I spotted her newest release, I picked it up out of curiosity. To be fair, the guy at the bookshop did tell me, “This is her newer style of writing,” and I just said, “Never mind,” because I’d never read any of her previous books—and after this one, I honestly don’t intend to.

Let me explain.

I loved the story of Margaret Ives. Genuinely, I found her character and her family’s cursed history fascinating. I also appreciated the format—the sort of interview-style storytelling gave it a unique edge. But if I’m being honest, I would’ve happily read an entire novel solely about the Ives family curse, focusing on Margaret and Cosmo. No need for any added romantic subplot.

Alice, our main character, is a journalist competing to write the authorised biography of Margaret Ives—up against a Pulitzer Prize-winning writer named Hayden. Sounds intriguing, right? Except… the love story between Alice and Hayden is, hands down, one of the worst I’ve ever read. Is this meant to be a joke?

I understand that Emily Henry is a beloved author and probably has far better books out there—but this one was a massive miss for me. Hayden treats Alice like an arrogant twat from the get-go, then suddenly they’re having late-night dinners, he kisses her a week in and immediately says, “That was a mistake”? Honestly, Alice should’ve legged it.

But of course not. Instead, they carry on like a couple after two bloody weeks. TWO WEEKS. Hayden even meets Alice’s mum! I’m sorry, but how are people calling this romance believable? It felt awkward, forced, unnatural—and frankly, made me cringe. I couldn’t stand their dynamic.

And despite the spicy scenes Emily Henry included, I skipped every single one. I just couldn’t bring myself to read about those two doing anything intimate—it made me uncomfortable.

And then there’s the ending. Of course there’s a big twist: Hayden turns out to be Margaret’s grandson. I saw that coming a mile off. But no, that’s not where it ends. The final twist? Alice gives birth to his child. No build-up, no pregnancy storyline—just bam! Baby. It felt rushed, unearned, and left me feeling more annoyed than anything.

The only thing I genuinely enjoyed in this fucking book was Margaret’s storyline—the twists, the loss, the drama, her love for Cosmo. That part deserved its own novel.
