I'm thrilled to bring to center stage two side characters from Book Smart, where I had to stop them from stealing the show at times. They have big personalities - opposite personalities, if you know your tropes! - and their story will be equal parts lighthearted and poignant. (less)

I randomly scrolled across an article about dating advice to "find a husband" in the 1950s. After a few minutes of laughter - and horror! - at the ridiculous advice, my first thought was, "Someone should try out this dating advice in the 21st century and see what happens." My second thought was, "Imagine if someone wrote a book about it." So I wrote it! (For the record, I'm happily married, so I did not do the dating experiment myself!) (less)

Why the Midwest Deserves a Rom-Com Shelf

Romance has built an entire beloved universe around Southern small towns - porches, sweet tea, a grandmother with opinions - and I love that universe, truly. But I kept wondering why the Midwest hasn't gotten the same treatment, because we've got just as much material.

I finally wrote up my case for a Midwest rom-com shelf. Putting it into words clarified for me that the charm of the Midwest isn't Read more of this blog post »

Amanda Pennington is starting Book Smart: Melanie finds a 1950s dating advice list, decides to test it on modern men, and completely fails to notice her best friend Cameron has been in love with her the whole time. 😭 Slow burn, best-friends-to-lovers, and a hero who is so green flag it should be illegal! 📖✨

“Ivy plopped a worn-looking fedora on top of his head. “I figured you wouldn’t care about dressing up. So I came prepared. You actually look good, Cam.”
I forced myself to refocus. “Very eighties Johnny Depp,” I agreed.
He blinked his gaze away from me and straightened the hat. “I’d rather be Jack Sparrow Johnny Depp, but I didn’t dress for that either.”
“It wouldn’t fit eighties night,” Ivy said.
He scoffed. “Who says it’s 1980s and not 1780s?”

“Was I feeling desperate? My inner feminist cried a valiant “Never!” My inner fan of Masterpiece romances sobbed into an embroidered pillow.”
Amanda C. Pennington, Book Smart

“I’m going to pine away for my perfect book boyfriend and remain dateless for the rest of my life.”
Julie Christianson, Pretending I Love Lucy
