Review:
David Dalglish’s The Sapphire Alter, being book 2 of the Vagrant Gods series, begins where The Bladed Faith left off! While we don’t really get any ‘new’ characters introduced to the crew of powerful revolutionists in this story, what we do get is lots and lots of character growth. There isn’t a single character who I grew bored with. I genuinely looked forward to seeing where each of them went and how Dalglish would deepen their development.

We still follow our main protagonist Cyrus who has become ‘The Vagrant’ god and I must say I find Dalglish’s world of gods and power-scaling to be not only unique but also quite awesome. Basically, what happens is that ‘faith’ plays a huge role in the world and with hundreds of different faiths scattered throughout the vast world, gods can be created simply by having a large number of people believe in them. Create a symbol worthy of worship, grant them publicity and give them to a crowd of believers, sacrifice a few dozen people in their name (yes this happens) and bam… you have a human-turned god. Cool, right? This vast increase in power-scaling leads to some truly epic moments and battle-scenes where our heroes this time fight against the heir-incarnate (basically the god-incarnate’s son and first in-line for his throne).

One of my personal favourites this time around was Arn. We didn’t know much about him in The Bladed Faith, but here we delve deeper into his past and find out the trauma that led to him turning away from his role as a Paragon and into the freedom fighting beast we see him as today. In this book, he changes from the stone-faced, emotionless killer he was in book one, into a deep-thinking character with multiple layers of depth. This is the hallmark of a very talented writer, and Dalglish manages to do this with not just one, but all of his characters. Usually I gravitate toward a certain person’s perspective in these wide range of POV books and often find myself skimming to my favourite ones. But here, I genuinely looked forward to each of them because I have that instilled ‘trust’ that Dalglish knows what he’s doing and some sort of revelation is coming my way with each character ARC.

For those of you that enjoy a little ‘romance’ in your books, there is lots here to be enjoyed, though I wouldn’t say these elements to the story overshadow anything else. All connections form naturally and they do so without taking the focus away from the brilliant story and powerful emotional responses of the characters as they take on their greatest threat yet.

Overall, I very much enjoyed my time in book 2 of the Vagrant Gods series and I can’t wait to delve into the final chapter with book 3! ...more

Review:

The Bladed Faith is the first of three books in Dalglish’s Vagrant Gods trilogy, and though it was my first time reading one of his books, it certainly won’t be the last. Before I get into the nitty gritty of what the book was about and the themes it portrays, I want to talk about how this book made me FEEL, because the books I become emotionally invested in always become my favourites. This fantasy book is one of the books I was read when I had a lot going on in life. I was writing all morning and teaching children all day, so by the time I went to read, I was pretty exhausted… This would lead to me reading about 20-50 pages per night, and sometimes placing the book aside and reading it every few says. Now usually when this happens, it’s easy to lose track and to fall off the emotional ride simply because of lack of investment on the reader’s part. What separates the great books from the good, however, is when you’ve had one of those weeks, read it here and there, and yet EVERY time you pick it up something epic happens that makes me go OMG. This is what I got with The Bladed Faith.

The story centralises around a forgotten prince and has a large focus on colonialism, and while this is nothing new (and I suppose you could say the same about the whole book really), it makes up for with brilliant writing and a crafty plot. Lots of authors these days are searching for ways to create something fresh and unique, and while this can be good, sometimes I just want to read something I know, because let’s face it, we love what we love for a reason.

Cyrus is the main character on show here, and his prince turned assassin character reminded me a lot of the Andy Peloquin’s Darkblade series in the way he goes about his righteous killing. I found him both relatable and likable, which is all you want in a main protagonist. This is very much a revolution against a corrupt hierarchy kind of story (similar to my own books!), mixed with a little revenge theme thrown in and there is also the found family trope, which brings me to something else I adored about the series, the side characters!

Every side character was well thought out and had a distinct role to play, from the mysterious mentor in Thorda, to the badass warrior in Stasia, to the kind yet ‘don’t mess with me’ character (who can also take on the form of gods!) in Mari, all the way to the love interest in ***** (no spoilers… 😉)

Overall, if you’re after something familiar yet full of twists and turns, you love reading about the rise and fall of gods and goddesses, and you enjoy gruesome fight scenes with plenty of blood, then this book is for you. My favourite of 2024 I think! ...more

Putt for providing me with a signed copy of his novella: A Reckless Courage. This is the second story I’ve read from the author – the first being the Kinslayer – and the second time exploring this viking-inspired world Putt has created. From my read of the Kinslayer, my favourite part about Putt’s writing was his worldbuilding, and I have to say that despite this book coming in the form of a novella, the world-building only gets even more dense and is told in such a natural way. I can really see the effort the author went to in his research, particularly for things related to Norse culture such as rune creation, character dialogue, gods/goddesses and setting detail.

Though where the Kinslayer was a grand epic with multiple POV characters and LOTS happening, A Reckless Courage was much more focused in scope, and I think this narrowed focus really allowed Putt’s writing to shine. Here we follow our main character Örvar and his wife Åslaug. The story follows the trope of the old retired war veteran trying to live his life after war. He and his wife have their word torn apart when a tragic miscarriage stills their newborn child. Örvar then, unable to cope, turns to heavy drink to pass the days. This then places a great amount of tension on their marriage. The story expands from there, and we are thrown into a wild tale of loss, addiction, redemption and healing that really packs an emotional punch, especially if you have (or you know someone who has) experienced a similar ordeal in their own life.

Despite the focus on delivering a character-driven novella, the story does still contain a good deal of fighting/battle scenes that will appease those seeking to fill that John Gwynne gap in their lives after completing the Bloodsworn trilogy. There are plenty of viking gods, shield-wall battles, some light magic and tons of viking culture to explore, and I have no doubt there will be more to come as the story continues to expand! ...more
