Do you read the tension in people? Is this something that comes easily to you? Do you find that you can quickly discern if someone is stressed, in pain, or about to show threatening behavior?

This discernment is common for empaths, a trait that I possess. It is also common for child abuse survivors as a defense mechanism.

Hi, this is Kurt B. Ellis, an award-winning author who self-publishes with Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing

Stay tuned, and let me share some of my experiences with discerning peoples’ tensions.

When Tension is Palpable

As a child abuse survivor, I learned early on to read people. Coming from a state of continuous threats, I became hypervigilant, hyper-aware of my surroundings, hyper-aware of people.

This is a trait that I honed into a defensive skill. With family, friends, and especially strangers, I am constantly observant of the slightest indicative body queue as warning signs.

It’s almost like some people carry a negative aura about them. Warnings that they are about to pounce or explode; the twitch of a finger, cheek muscle, tightening of jaw, or pressing of lips. The darting of eyes, the slightly lowered eyebrow. The ever-so-minimal change in voice, sweat, body odor, etc.

Quickly and accurately reading these warning queues helped me to survive then and now. I can think of countless times I rescued myself from harmful situations by being keenly aware of people and promptly removing myself from pending harm when the tension was palpable.

I have shared experiences with discerning peoples’ tensions in my award-winning novel.

My Award-Winning Novel

My award-winning novel’s title is “Boy in the Barn: Journey of Triumph Over Horrific Child Abuse, Sexual Abuse, and PTSD.” It’s an inspiring LGBTQIA+ coming-of-age story about hope, courage, and the resilience of the human spirit.

Featuring our medal winners and finalists in each of their categories, the Global Book Awards aim to recognize talented authors that have not received the recognition they deserve in self-publishing.

In this modern age of publishing, books need to be appraised not only by their content and writing style, but also by the way they present and market themselves to the prospective buyer, whether that is in the good ratings it has on important stores like Amazon, its book cover and description, or the number of reviews it has collected. They must also appeal to new readers, so part of the evaluation included a survey asking avid readers to select the top five books they enjoyed the most.

The awards are grouped by category and divided into Gold, Silver, Bronze, and Award Finalists. We congratulate the winners once again and encourage readers to try out their books. Hello Kurt. Congratulations! We are pleased to confirm your book Boy in the Barn won a medal in this year’s Global Book Awards.

A Captivating True Crime Story at Its Best!

This is an incredible true crime story of how an intensely sadistic woman cruelly manipulates her daughters, husbands, stepmother, nephew, friends, co-workers, and so on. Her prey is anyone she meets and can pull into her web of lies, deceit, and coercion. She's even directly involved in murders but always tries to pin them on someone else. She's the master manipulator. She knows no limit to the horrid things she tries to get people to do. When you think it's awful, just blink, and it gets worse. This book was a roller coaster ride with multiple characters and layers of plots and subplots. It was a captivating reveal in the mind of a maniacal, manipulative, self-serving criminal. I found it hard to put down. Another winner by Gregg Olsen!

A Gut-Wrenching Expose of Corey Feldman’s Life!

As a childhood sexual abuse victim, I had mixed feelings about reading this book. I did not grow up in show biz or during the Coreys’ generation, yet I found many parallels with my childhood and life. This book was a gut-wrenching expose of Corey Feldman’s life. He does not hold back. He does not paint Hollywood or show business with sunshine, instead tells it like it was and gives the reader a glimpse of the manipulated life that child actors live, manipulation by parents, family and friends, producers, and directors. He reveals his struggles with drug abuse and his journey to lifelong recovery. He is careful, however, not to delve too deeply into his sexual abuse. He lightly discusses his abuse and that of the deceased Corey Haim. This was a well-written memoir, a tell-all I found hard to put down. And I was amazed in the end by his mature perspective of life. And how he was able to find solace and show forgiveness, especially to his reckless parents. Job well done, Corey Feldman!

A Masterfully Written Novel!

As a childhood sexual abuse victim by male abusers, I agreed to review this book with feelings of reserved curiosity. Nevertheless, I was quickly impressed with the writer’s style. Hertz demonstrates a mastery of English with his colorful use of words to set the theme and plot and convey his characters’ thoughts and feelings.

Hertz takes you on the painful journey of Dylan, the main character, to find peace with his traumatic past of horrific childhood sexual abuse at the hands of a duplicitous boyfriend who pimped him out to a group of pedophiles. In addition, this boyfriend introduced him to a world of severe drug use and sex addiction. Dylan struggles through it into adulthood, making many mistakes while trying to get justice against his abusers. Yet the clock is ticking, with the statute of limitations against crimes committed many years before. Ultimately, Dylan obtains much-needed evidence to cinch his case with the FBI.

This was a book that I found hard to put down and compelled to keep reading. As a sexual abuse victim, I empathized with Dylan, understood his many struggles, and wanted justice for his abusers. I loved this novel until the end, and I’m sure you will too.

Mesmerizing Until the Last Page!

As a male sexual abuse victim of male abusers, I had ambivalent feelings about reading this book by Adam Sommers. But I was intrigued to read this story about male sexual abuse victims of a female abuser. This twisted narration does not disappoint. Sommers lays out the journey of an extremely wealthy woman who uses her position in life to take advantage of and sexually victimize her male employees. The characters were well-developed, and the story was spellbinding. I was mesmerized until the last page.

Disturbing and Intense!

I was reeled in by Gregg Olsen’s hook in the first chapter. And I didn’t want to stop reading until the end. This was a disturbing story and intense to read. Olsen used his platform to bring to light the common problem of the long-lasting effects of child sexual abuse and how it impacts families for a lifetime. I loved how Olsen headed up chapters with different characters' views. It helped me to keep track of all the main- and subplots. Amazingly, this book had an unexpected twist at the end with one of its sub-characters. It created an ending I did not expect. An engaging thriller to read, for sure!

Intoxicating “Who Done It”

I describe this book as an intoxicating “who done it.” Olsen masterfully pulls you in with a series of unresolved murders of young women in Tacoma, WA. Some subplots steer you in one direction, making you think you’ve resolved the murder mysteries. Yet, it is not until the last chapters that the real murderer is revealed, a person unsuspected from the beginning. Once I got into it, this book was hard to put down. A captivating thriller to the last page!

Mesmerized Until the End!

I was pleasantly surprised to read this thriller by Amanda Jaeger. I am not interested in art or paintings, so I started this book with ambivalent feelings. But Jaeger masterfully uses this backdrop to draw the reader in and hold their attention. Once I started reading, I didn’t want to stop until I finished; I was mesmerized until the end. Jaeger ends her book on a cliffhanger, and it begs for a sequel. Dive in and hold on! You will not be disappointed.

Written With Poetic Color

As a southerner, I read this book with initial mixed feelings, only to find myself drawn to it in the middle and couldn’t put it down. Owens does a magnificent job of writing with colorful, almost poetic, imagery of the North Carolina coastline depicting a time during the 1900s when the south transitioned from old to new. Linking nature to human frailty, this is a captivating murder mystery with a surprise at the end that shows all is not as it appears. An intriguingly entertaining book to read.

An Exciting Dystopian Thriller

I was pleasantly surprised to read this dystopian thriller by Joseph Dowling. Dowling takes you along the perilous journey of Michael Randall and his daughter, Hope, to escape their rigidly controlled English government. A country where thirteen-year-old girls are forced to submit to fertility tests for government-run baby factories. She finds refuge in Scotland with her father’s brother. Yet, it is unclear what will happen to Michael. This book is ripe for a sequel. Jump in! I’m sure you’ll enjoy the ride. You will not be disappointed.

Should you trust your first impressions? This is a question I’ve asked myself many times and have discussed often with coworkers and family.

As a child abuse survivor, I developed a high sense of intuition about people. I became an empath. I could quickly sense if strangers were good or a threat.

Hi, this is Kurt B. Ellis, an award-winning author who self-publishes with Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing

Stay tuned, and let me share some of my experiences with first impressions.

When I Got it Right

My highly developed sense of intuition about people has, for the most part, served me well throughout life.

I have often benefited from trusting first impressions in my private and professional life.

I would say that my success record was spot on. I usually got it right around 97% of the time.

I could meet people, size them up in less than five minutes, and know if they were good.

I knew, with a high degree of confidence, if they were good for me or my profession.

I became so good at it in my last job that other hiring managers would have me meet prospective candidates and give them feedback about their potential hire. Often, the profession was not even related to mine. I was wanted for my viewpoint.

When I Got it Wrong

About 3% of the time, my sense of intuition did not serve me well. And for the most part, it was when I did not follow my head or was influenced by others.

I would later look back and kick myself for not following my first impressions.

This happened in a couple of short-term relationships. I saw red flags and early warning signs within just a few minutes of meeting that person, but went against my better judgment. And I paid a hefty emotional price until I ended the toxic relationship.

This happened more often in my professional life, especially around hiring new staff.

I hired one young man to work in my department because we were short-staffed, over-logged, overworked, and desperate to fill the position. Yet, my first impression told me he was not a good fit. Within less than three months, he became an emotional employee trainwreck.

On another occasion, I was asked to interview a group of candidates for a VP position.

One of the candidates was highly charismatic with a strong likability factor. He was smooth and a great talker. He misled the other interviewers.

He came across to me, however, quite differently. I saw danger in the first impression. I immediately picked up on gaps in his employment, and he struggled to explain. I sensed he was hiding something. I had a gut feeling that he was not a good fit.

When it came time to hire, I was overruled even after expressing my concerns, and the candidate was hired. Within a year, he was fired for unscrupulous business practices and arrested for embezzling over $100,000 from my employer.

My viewpoint about new hires was never questioned again.

As a child abuse survivor, I learned early on to trust first impressions and not allow others to change my mind. I have shared experiences with first impressions in my award-winning novel.

Hello Kurt.

Was your childhood manipulated? Did you grow up being controlled, coerced, and extorted to do things you did not want?

I am a child and sexual abuse survivor. Beginning at six and lasting for the next eleven years, I was groomed by my sadistic brother and then pimped out to men in a pedophilic cult that he was a member of.

The childhood manipulation I endured had lasting effects into childhood, shaping my sense of self-worth and self-esteem.

Hi, this is Kurt B. Ellis, an award-winning author who self-publishes with Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing

Stay tuned, and let me share some of the devastating impacts of childhood manipulation.

Controlled, Coerced, and Extorted

I was controlled, coerced, and extorted to be a child prostitute.

I was controlled by shame and embarrassment. I grew up in a southern society in the 1960s where sex between males was not tolerated.

Many outed homosexuals were rejected by their families; some fled, and some were even killed. After rejection, the homosexuals that remained were marginalized to the fringes of the community. And my next point is the most salient. It did not matter if you were a willing participant in sexual relations between males or not, so child victims received the same prejudicial treatment.

I was also coerced to keep my silence. I was repeatedly and often threatened with death if I ever spoke of my abuse or about the cult. And the threats continued after my abuse stopped. I lived most of my adulthood under the dark cloud of death threats.

In addition, I was extorted by threats that other family members would be drawn into this world of cult prostitution if I did not willingly participate. My brother knew that I especially loved my little sister. He continuously reminded me that she would be his next target if I failed to perform as instructed or ordered.

Damaged Self

As a result of my childhood manipulation, I grew up with damaged self-esteem and self-worth.

I compensated by becoming an academic perfectionist. Any grade less than ‘A++’ was a complete failure in my head. And this continued into adulthood with many significant accomplishments, yet I still felt inadequate.

As a young man, I felt subhuman, like I was not worthy of life. I spiraled into compulsive sexual promiscuity that became forever not satisfying. I lived with years of debilitating depression and anxiety. On multiple occasions, I struggled with thoughts of suicide.

I also became a ‘yes’ person and a people pleaser, always putting myself last. This affected my work and personal relationships. I did not learn to stick up and advocate for myself until my mid-forties, after I received much-needed EMDR therapy.

By now, it should be clear that childhood manipulation is highly damaging with lifelong effects. I have shared the impacts of childhood manipulation in my award-winning novel.

I was pleasantly surprised to read this thriller by Amanda Jaeger. I am not interested in art or paintings, so I started this book with ambivalent feelings. Are you stronger than you think? Too often in life, we face obstacles, hardship, or despair, which may seem overwhelming, daunting, or too much to bear. Do you realize it strengthens you every time you endure something like this?

I am now in my sixties. And Lord knows I’ve been through my fair share of hardships.

Hi, this is Kurt B. Ellis, an award-winning author who self-publishes with Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing. Stay tuned, and let me share why I became stronger than I ever thought I could.

Strength Develops with Experience

As I’ve journeyed through life, I now realize that I am much stronger than I ever thought I could be. But I didn’t always feel that way.

I remember times in life when, at the moment, I thought I hit rock bottom. For example, the eleven years of sexual abuse that I endured as a child, the loss of loved ones, the loss of a job and home, the loss of a marriage, coming out as gay and dealing with harsh judgment and prejudice, and so on.

Especially when I talk about my child abuse, others have told me, “I don’t see how you survived the torment that you endured. If it was me, I would have curled up in a ball and died.”

Would you? Would you, really? I beg to differ. Think about it. If faced with survival over death, most of us will choose survival and even fight to live. It’s a basic instinct; it’s part of our DNA.

I bet you’d find an inner strength that you didn’t know you ever had. And you would hold onto it desperately to survive.

I’m so glad I relied on my inner strength and became a survivor. I now have a much more fulfilled life.

It sounds like I’ve been through a lot, but I grew from each experience. That is, life’s experiences develop inner strength.

And now, I face new hardships with a greater sense of calm and ease. It’s as if I now have a built-in mechanism to face new challenges.

Where Does Inner Strength Come From?

You will find your own inner strength as you journey through life. And you will discover most strength alone.

Your inner strength comes from within. It’s not something you’ve inherited or can pass on to your offspring. It’s uniquely yours.

As such, do not rely on others to swoop down and save you. It is not up to family, friends, society, or government to save or protect you.

Learn to save yourself. Be your own best advocate. Be your own best protector.

I have shared my thoughts about finding inner strength in my award-winning novel.

Would you like to learn some essential life-altering words of wisdom?

My grandfather taught me these precious life concepts over fifty years ago. These guiding words were my north star, especially at the lowest moments in my childhood when I was being abused.

I am now in my sixties. I have drawn strength from them repeatedly as I’ve progressed through life.

Hi, this is Kurt B. Ellis, an author who self-publishes with Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing. Stay tuned, and let me share some critical life-altering words of wisdom.

Managing Money

One of the first things my grandpa taught me was about managing money.

He’d say, “Learn to live within your means and learn from the mistakes of others. For whatever life throws at you, you be satisfied with what you’ve been given and don’t put yourself in a bunch of debt.”

Living life without overwhelming debt has been one of the most significant life choices I’ve made. Keeping finances simple has given me financial freedom, ease, and comfort.

Achieving Life's Aspirations

Another set of his great words of wisdom was, “Anything in life can be achieved. The world is your oyster. You can do or accomplish anything you want in this life if you work hard enough.”

Oh, how these words ring so true. Hard work, perseverance, and unrelenting determination to complete a goal are all key ways to achieve one’s aspirations.

The 99 Percent of Life

Do you know what is the 99 percent of life? Have you ever heard of this phrase?

“When faced with hardship or despair, the biggest part of any obstacle in life is the one within yourself. You see, once you decide that you can do, accomplish, or overcome something – that’s the 99% of it – the 99% of life.

That’s the toughest part, the mental part. The rest, the doing of it, the 1%, becomes simple. All you then need to do is just see it to completion.

But if you convince yourself that you can’t do something before you even get started, you’ve already defeated yourself.”

Rebounding and Learning from Mistakes

And finally, one more piece of my grandpa’s wisdom.

“And one more thing, when life gets you down, there’s no point in laying down and wallowing in it. Let your mistakes be a lesson; do your best not to repeat them. Get yourself up and move forward because all you’ve ever got left is the future.”

I have covered all of these principles in the Words of Wisdom chapter of my award-winning novel.

As you may recall, in September, I received a Global Book Award for my book, “Boy in the Barn: Journey of Triumph Over Horrific Child Abuse, Sexual Abuse, and PTSD.” Today, I am sharing how this award has impacted my book and some activities outside of writing and being an author.

Hi, this is Kurt B. Ellis, an author who self-publishes with Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing. Stay tuned, and let me share more about what’s been happening since my Global Book Award.

An Uptick in Book Sales and Social Media Presence

When I learned of my award, I immediately seized the opportunity. I began promoting my book on social media as an award winner. I have maintained a consistent presence on social media, my website, and my blog.

I have since realized a positive uptick in book sales and followers on my social media. I have also been contacted by two potential producers for film/TV offers.

So, all said, the impact of this award has been quite positive.

Registering My Copyright

At the recommendation of an entertainment attorney, I registered my book’s copyright with the US Copyright Office. It took almost six weeks to obtain my certificate of registration.

Now that my registration is filed, my book is protected from anyone trying to steal my material.

What's Been Happening in My Personal Life

In addition to my work as an author, I also have personal activities that I continue to do. From my author profile, you may notice that I am a grandpa, an avid gardener, and a yard worker. And this takes up a good bit of my other time.

Now that winter is approaching, my Michigan garden and yard are winding down. I’m now quite busy with fall cleanup and winterizing. After our first frost, I pulled up all the spent vegetable plants and vines and closed my garden for the season.

Over the last few weeks, I’ve added recyclable yard waste, grass clippings, and leaves to my growing compost pile. I still need another heavy frost on my front yard flower beds before finishing the yard cleanup. Next, I will clean out birdhouses so they’ll be ready for next spring.

And then, it will be time to put away the lawn mover and pressure washer for the season and pull out the snow blower. Yikes! The dreaded snow word. Before the extreme cold arrives, I hope to get in a couple more weekend bonfires before shutting down the fire pit.

Travel and Connections

In October, to celebrate my birthday, my husband and I traveled to Key West, FL, for a long weekend. We had a blast. I loved the warm weather, incredible fresh seafood, and fabulous nighttime entertainment. It was a much-needed getaway for the both of us.

Recently, I spent the first two weeks of November in Canada to babysit my two little granddaughters while my son and daughter-in-law took a much-deserved vacation in Jamaica.

What's Next

For my next writing adventure, I have decided to compose a murder mystery fiction that is somewhat related to my “Boy in the Barn” book.

I’ve developed the plot, theme, and character profiles. I’ve written about a hundred pages thus far and continue to build a who-done-it that will only be solved in the last few pages. I intend to leave the reader guessing until the bitter end.

More on that to come in future posts. And, of course, I hope it will be as successful as my award-winning novel.

My novel is for sale on Amazon in Kindle, paperback, and audiobook form. The audiobook is also distributed on Audible and iTunes.

Reviews of my favorite books If You Tell: A True Story of Murder, Family Secrets, and the Unbreakable Bond of Sisterhood If You Tell: A True Story of Murder, Family Secrets, and the Unbreakable Bond of Sisterhood by Gregg Olsen

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I Know Where You Live I Know Where You Live by Gregg Olsen

Paint by Murders (Emily Ellis, #1) Paint by Murders by Amanda Jaeger

Mesmerized Until the End!

I was pleasantly surprised to read this thriller by Amanda Jaeger. I am not interested in art or paintings, so I started this book with ambivalent feelings. But Jaeger masterfully uses this backdrop to draw the reader in and hold their attention. Once I started reading, I didn’t want to stop until I finished; I was mesmerized until the end. Jaeger ends her book on a cliffhanger, and it begs for a sequel. Dive in and hold on! You will not be disappointed.

Where the Crawdads Sing Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Written With Poetic Color

As a southerner, I read this book with initial mixed feelings, only to find myself drawn to it in the middle and couldn’t put it down. Owens does a magnificent job of writing with colorful, almost poetic, imagery of the North Carolina coastline depicting a time during the 1900s when the south transitioned from old to new. Linking nature to human frailty, this is a captivating murder mystery with a surprise at the end that shows all is not as it appears. An intriguingly entertaining book to read.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

As a child abuse survivor, do you feel guilty for being good to yourself? That is, doing something that makes you happy, brings you joy, and gives you contentment. Did you know you were probably conditioned to be this way by your upbringing?

I was raised in a toxic, dysfunctional family where children were not allowed to express themselves or ever question their parents’ authority.

Hi, this is Kurt B. Ellis, an author who self-publishes with Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing. Stay tuned, and let me share more about my experiences with feeling guilty over self-love.

A Setup for Child Abuse

Let me explain why growing up in a toxic, dysfunctional family was the perfect setup for child and sexual abuse.

We, children, were expected to blindly obey and conform to our parents’ wishes regardless of whether we agreed with them. Any verbal or non-verbal resistance was quickly dealt with by harsh corporal punishment.

Our parents were workaholics and expected no less from their children. If we spent time being unproductive, just being a playful child, we were accused of being slothful and lazy.

We also felt guilty if we did nothing to make them look good to their broader families, church, or community. We were taught that we had to earn their love. This further translated into a power dynamic where the younger children were expected to obey the older children.

Beginning at six, I was sexually abused and groomed by my sadistic brother, who later forced me to become a child sex worker for a local satanic cult of which he was a member. My abuse lasted for eleven years.

He convinced me that I was trash and was the cause of my abuse. My brother also led me to believe I was unworthy of being loved, even God’s love.

My self-esteem and self-worth were shattered for many years. And for about half of my life, I was never comfortable doing anything good for myself. I always put my needs last or would make excuses or talk myself out of doing something good for me.

The Power of EMDR Therapy

This, however, did change after much-needed EMDR therapy, where I finally learned to love myself and feel good about doing something positive for me.

For example, I did not take my first vacation until my early fifties. Initially awkward, I persevered and learned to lift myself and enjoy life. And now, years later, I enjoy all types of vacations among the other good bounties of life.

You can also learn to love yourself without guilt with support and therapy. Loving yourself without guilt is one of the key things I’ve written about in my award-winning novel.

My novel is for sale on Amazon in Kindle, paperback, and audiobook form. The audiobook is also distributed on Audible and iTunes.
