Matthew Fox lives in Stockholm, Sweden with his partner and their two young children.

His latest book for readers aged 9 to 13 is the THE LOVELY DARK. Set in London in the aftermath of the pandemic, it’s a book about grief, myth, and the resilience of the human imagination.

‘I’m trying to write grown-up books for kids and reluctant readers of all ages. My books are meant to be read quickly: short chapters, simple prose, lots of action. The aim is a kind of magical seriousness – and all that means is that I want the books to be as magical as possible and as serious as possible. They should feel like Powell & Pressburger movies for kids – off-beat, audacious, romantic, literal, in glorious Technicolor…’

HUMAN AUTHORED

My new book The Lovely Dark is 100% human-authored, by me. The idea came to me before AI for writers was even a thing...

And while I have a few issues with the Society of Authors/Author’s Guild certification scheme (brainstorming? outlining?) I'm generally supportive. It's a start, it'll be refined, it'll get better - and it will make people think.

Topics Mentioning This Author

Margaret Atwood
“Time is not a line but a dimension, like the dimensions of space. If you can bend space you can bend time also, and if you knew enough and could move faster than light you could travel backward in time and exist in two places at once.”
Margaret Atwood, Cat’s Eye

Mark Twain
“I do not fear death. I had been dead for billions and billions of years before I was born, and had not suffered the slightest inconvenience from it.”
Mark Twain

Ali Smith
“Art makes nothing happen in a way that makes something happen.”
Ali Smith, How to be Both

Stephen Koch
“And please don't sink into this woeful nonsense about not having time to read...The real culprit here is almost never your schedule. It is your boredom--your boredom with the books you think you are supposed to read. Find a book you want, a book that gives you real trembling excitement, a book that is hot in your hands, and you'll have time galore.”
Stephen Koch

Stephen Koch
“Incredibly, there are people—smart people—who think a prim disdain for drama is somehow a sign of “good taste.” It is more often the reverse: a lamentable insensitivity to the essence of the art, a failure to “get it” on the most essential level. It is more often a sign not of good taste but of artistic insecurity. Not knowing how far to go, the writer goes nowhere. Lifelessness is not a form of elegance you should pursue.”
Stephen Koch, The Modern Library Writer's Workshop: A Guide to the Craft of Fiction
