For 33 years, veteran prosecutor Corey Smith pursued some of the biggest tax cheats in history, recovering literally billions of dollars for U.S. taxpayers. His career culminated with the Robert Brockman case, which is described in my book,
Death, Taxes, and Turduckens. The case involved taxes and penalties of
more than $1.4 billion; some former IRS investigators believe the actual settlement with the now deceased Brockman's estate should be more than
$4 billion.
Smith and I recently wrote an Op-Ed, published by
The Hill, which describes the DOJ's plan to dismantle its Tax Division and distribute its resources to regional offices. It argues that this plan will cripple efforts to make billionaire tax cheats pay their taxes.
