The more I try…moreI've learned to view writer's block as a logjam. Too many thoughts and ideas have crashed together and clogged up the flow of my story. The more I try to fight it and push ideas through, the harder it becomes to get anything out.

Instead, I take this opportunity to go back over what I've already written. If, however, my writer's block happens on page one, then I revisit the ideas that inspired my to write in the first place.

Making a rough outline has been very helpful in reducing the amount of writer's block I experience. Still, there are other tasks I can do in the meantime that will help my writing further along in the process. For example, I can write about something that happened to me that influences the story I'm trying to write. There is always something I can write about, even if it has nothing to do with my project. Something as simple as describing the view from my window can be enough to clear up the blockage.

Sometimes, though, I may need to take a break and do something else.(less)
