Celebrating the Artists of Curly Crow Goes to the Sunport
When I started writing Curly Crow Goes to the Sunport, I wanted to create more than just a story about travel. I aimed to highlight the incredible art and culture that make the Albuquerque Sunport so special. For me, the Sunport has always been more than an airport; it’s a gateway to the beauty and history of New Mexico.
As a lifelong Albuquerque resident, I’ve grown up admiring the breathtaking artwork that adorns the Sunport. It’s a space where travelers can pause and connect with the region’s rich cultural heritage through the works of gifted artists. These pieces inspired Curly Crow’s latest adventure, and I’m thrilled to have worked with the Sunport to feature them in the book.
Celebrating the Artists and Their MasterpiecesThree remarkable works of art are prominently featured in Curly Crow Goes to the Sunport:
Bill Baker – Tarahumara of the Sierra MadreThis striking pastel on board captures the strength and grace of the Tarahumara people of Mexico’s Sierra Madre. Bill Baker’s detailed work reflects the connection between people, place, and movement, perfectly aligning with the spirit of travel that defines the Sunport.
Pop Chalee – Buffalo Mural and Horse Mural
These vibrant casein-on-canvas murals are quintessential examples of Pop Chalee’s imaginative style. Her works depict majestic animals in dynamic motion, blending elements of tradition and fantasy. The murals have been a beloved feature of the Sunport for decades, captivating visitors with their energy and beauty.Lincoln Fox – Dream of Flight This stunning bronze sculpture celebrates the wonder of aviation and the freedom of flight. Its elegant design embodies the Sunport’s role as a gateway to the skies, inspiring travelers and now readers of all ages.Sharing the Book with the Artists
With Curly Crow Goes to the Sunport now published, I’m reaching out to these amazing artists—or their families, in the case of Pop Chalee—to send them copies of the book as a token of my gratitude. Their artwork has inspired countless visitors to the Sunport, and now it will inspire a new generation of children to dream, create, and explore.
Why This MattersArt is a powerful tool for storytelling, and including these works in Curly Crow Goes to the Sunport allowed me to share the rich history and culture of New Mexico in a way that resonates with readers. These artists’ contributions have left a lasting impact on our community, and I’m honored to showcase their work in this story.
This project has been a labor of love, rooted in my deep connection to Albuquerque and my admiration for the Sunport’s art collection. I hope this book inspires children and families to see the world differently, to explore the rich heritage of New Mexico, and to appreciate the beauty of art in everyday life.
Let’s celebrate these artists and their works together!

How Author Nicholas Aragon and Photographer Stephanie Nieto Bring New Mexico to Life.
If you're a fan of the Curly Crow children’s book series or a lover of New Mexico's breathtaking beauty, you won’t want to miss the chance to meet Nicholas Aragon and Stephanie Nieto, two talented creatives deeply rooted in the rich culture of New Mexico. Their latest collaboration, Curly Crow’s Family Feast, combines engaging storytelling with stunning, authentic photography, making this book a true work of art for both children and adults alike. Enjoy 15% Off...Buy Now.
It was at the 2023 Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta that Nicholas Aragon and Stephanie Nieto first crossed paths. Nicholas, the visionary author behind the Curly Crow series, was volunteering at the New Mexico True tourism booth, sharing his love for New Mexico and introducing his work to locals and visitors from around the globe. Stephanie, a renowned photographer with an eye for capturing the state's vibrant landscapes and wildlife, was immediately captivated by the playful, educational concept of Curly Crow.
A simple question about Curly Crow was all it took to spark a friendship. As two artists with a passion for the land of enchantment, Nicholas and Stephanie quickly bonded over their love for New Mexico's unique beauty, wildlife, and cultural heritage (photo by Stephanie Nieto).
For Nicholas, the mission behind Curly Crow is clear: to foster a love of reading in children. His philosophy is simple but impactful—create an engaging character, put a book in a child’s hands, and the rest will follow. "Reading is exercise for the brain," Nicholas often says, and he's made it his goal to make reading accessible and exciting. His Curly Crow series serves as an adventure guide, encouraging kids to pick up a book and dive into stories that are both fun and educational.
Nicholas frequently attends events throughout New Mexico, where he does story time, author visits, and even customized presentations for older students, covering topics like his journey as an author, website building, and illustration techniques. He loves showing kids, from kindergarten to high school, that they too can create something meaningful.
Stephanie’s photography journey is equally inspiring. Known for her ability to capture the essence of New Mexico’s landscapes and wildlife, her work has been featured in national publications and local businesses alike. Her stunning images of New Mexico’s community, landscapes, and wildlife—including her favorite subject, the iconic roadrunner—have become a testament to her talent and dedication.
Stephanie's artistry made her the perfect collaborator for Curly Crow’s Family Feast, a Thanksgiving-themed book about New Mexico birds. The book provides kids with fun, factual information about local bird species and includes a trivia page for extra engagement. In a special touch, Nicholas included one of Stephanie’s original roadrunner photos at the back of the book, bringing Curly Crow’s world to life with her stunning, authentic imagery.
Curly Crow’s Family Feast is a special project that blends storytelling, wildlife facts, and interactive elements, making it a perfect addition to any child's bookshelf. In this delightful tale, Curly Crow learns about the various birds of New Mexico and how they find food and thrive in their natural habitats. As a fun challenge, young readers are invited to count how many times the roadrunner appears in the book—a nod to Stephanie’s beloved wildlife photography.
This collaboration is a true gift to the community. Both Nicholas and Stephanie share a passion for inspiring others and making meaningful connections. Their work is not about fame or wealth; it’s about giving back to New Mexico and creating a sense of pride for local families.
This isn’t the last you’ll see of Curly Crow. Nicholas is also developing a series about two lovable Boston Terriers, Rooger and Loki. The first book in the series, Rooger and Loki Learn Manners, is geared toward young dog lovers and Boston Terrier enthusiasts alike.
And as for Stephanie, her photography continues to capture the attention of people far beyond New Mexico. Together, Nicholas and Stephanie are showing the world what it means to be New Mexican artists, weaving the beauty, history, and warmth of their homeland into every piece they create (photo by Stephanie Nieto).

Nicholas Aragon and the Curly Crow Series
The journey of writing and publishing is often as thrilling as the stories themselves. For me, Nicholas Aragon, this journey has been an incredible adventure, full of creativity, hard work, and collaboration with some amazing individuals. The Curly Crow series, a project close to my heart, is not just my creation but a product of many talented and supportive people who have been part of my author journey. Today, I want to share my story and extend my deepest gratitude to those who have helped make Curly Crow a reality.
The Genesis of Curly CrowThe Curly Crow series began as a simple idea, inspired by a desire to create engaging and meaningful stories for children. As I developed the series, it became clear that bringing Curly Crow to life would require more than just my efforts. It would take a dedicated team of professionals, each contributing their unique skills and expertise.
Mentorship and GuidanceOne of the most significant influences on my journey has been April Cox. April has been an extraordinary mentor, guiding young authors like me and helping us build our skills. Her insights and support have been invaluable, providing a solid foundation for the development of the Curly Crow series. April, thank you for believing in me and for your unwavering support.
The Talented TeamIn addition to April, several other talented individuals have played crucial roles in the success of Curly Crow:

Nancy Valenzuela, our most recent collaborator, who has done an outstanding job translating the Curly Crow series into Spanish. Nancy, an experienced bilingual educator, has brought her expertise to our project, ensuring that our stories reach a wider audience. The Power of Illustration
Illustrations are the heart of any children's book, and I have been fortunate to work with some incredible illustrators. Their creativity and talent have brought Curly Crow to life, captivating the imaginations of young readers. A special thank you to all the illustrators who have contributed to this series.
A Special CollaborationLastly, I want to extend my gratitude to Dr. Rudy Garcia, who has contributed to a very special book, "Curly Crow Goes to the Sunport." Rudy’s insights into the operations of the Albuquerque International Sunport have been instrumental in shaping this story. I also want to thank the staff at the ABQ Sunport for supporting this idea. We can't wait to share this book with young travelers as they embark on their adventures to New Mexico!
Looking AheadAs I reflect on this journey, I am filled with gratitude for the families who have read the Curly Crow series. As I look ahead, I am excited about the future and the opportunity to make more connections with young readers, teachers, parents, and grandparents through my stories.
In a world increasingly dominated by technology and screens, children's books hold a special place. They provide a unique opportunity for families to connect over story time, creating cherished memories and fostering a love of reading. My goal is to continue creating stories that bring families together and inspire young minds.
To everyone who has been part of this journey—thank you. Your support and dedication have made the Curly Crow series possible, and I am forever grateful.
