Seeing his emotional struggle afterwards made me want to write about a similar situation. I actually dragged him along on a trip to South Dakota with me as I did research.(less)

I first read The Bluest Eye in a creative writing class when I was a junior in college. Rereading it as a 45 year old father, I was able to appreciate it so much more. For one, Morrison is an excellent stylist and my own knowledge of craft and prose ...more

I think there is a lot to like in this book. If only it weren't so burdened by the unnecessary and redundant. Joyce Carol Oates creates some wonderfully broken yet sympathetic characters in Jules and Maureen and even Loretta, but she takes 550 pages ...more

John Duffy and 2 other people liked Kim Ross's review of A Little Life:
A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara
"This is not for the faint of heart. It’s beautifully written and devastating. ‘The Happy Years’ were such a welcomed reprieve, but I knew it wouldn’t last. I’ll be thinking about this one for a while. "
Manure Dreams and Other Essays by Richard Holinger
"Holinger muses and reminisces on his life as a writer, teacher, father and husband, going back to his privileged childhood on Chicago's North Shore to his retirement years. In this series of essays he is honest and vulnerable about his hopes, fears, " Read more of this review »
Dress Codes for Small Towns by Courtney C. Stevens
"This book is an imperfect and beautiful journey on sexuality and love between friends and partners. This book isn’t about finding the answers that put the puzzle together. It’s literally about the journey, a teen coming of age with a big heart and he" Read more of this review »

“We wake up every morning thinking that the day we're about to live is going to be one kind of way. Like the days before it. One to shuffle in with all the rest. When we look back at our lives and all the things that we've done, there's a sad realization hat most days are entirely wiped from our memories. We know those days must have happened or else we wouldn't be where we are, but the substance of them is gone. Of a lifetime of conversations, only the sentiments remain. Specificity eroded down to a nub of ambiguity. On inspection, whole years are nothing but a vague sense built out of the moments that lasted. The moments that made a deeper imprint. Occasionally, the truly spectacular, but more often, the deeply embarrassing. The tragic. Then without realizing we invent material to fill the gaps. Words never said and actions never taken to add flourish or valor or meaning where likely there was none. Even my two years working at Saladas. Most of it is gone. Washed away by the repetition of it all.”

“No one here ever asks what I plan to do with my life. They only ever ask what I plan to do tonight.”
