MK Pagano is the author of GIRLS WHO BURN, a YA Thriller out 7/16/24 from Penguin Teen, and 7/18/24 from Hachette UK.

She is represented by Barbara Poelle and Sydnie Thornton of Word One Literary.

When she’s not busy pondering the angst of the fictional people in her stories, she can be found reading (from her own TBR and that of her children), dreaming of restoring an old French chateau, and wandering the weirder parts of New Jersey, where she currently resides with her family.

1. Writing is rewriting. It takes several drafts to produce anything good.
2. Find good critique partners. Other people are invaluable in spotting things in your stories you cannot spot yourself. It will take some time and work to find the right critique partners for you, but put in the effort, because they are so worth it. Plus, editing someone else’s book helps you with self-editing–PLUS, writer friends are everything.
3. Be patient. Yes there are unicorns who write one book and get it immediately agented and published. These people are rare. Most of us languish in obscurity for years. Love the process, because it’s the only part you can control.(less)

25 Goals for 2025

I normally write this post before the end of the year, but holidays with young children and lots of family and travel make it so I can’t do much at the end of the day besides consume cookies and chocolate.

And so, here we are, finally a small moment to do the goal thing on New Year’s Day 2025.

First, to reflect on last year. How did I do on my 2024 goals?

Things I did that I said I’d do: found a new

"Ce livre m’a profondément marquée. Dès les premières pages, on est happé par l’intensité de l’histoire et par des personnages brisés mais terriblement humains.

“You build this whole future with someone, and even when things aren't perfect between you, you think you still have time to fix it. To do the things you always wanted to do. You keep your plans safe inside your heart, hold on to them when things get hard. But then that person dies, and that pretty future inside of you? That dies too.”
M.K. Pagano, Girls Who Burn

“I am not good at noticing when I'm happy, except in retrospect.”
Tana French, In the Woods

“I had learned early to assume something dark and lethal hidden at the heart of anything I loved. When I couldn't find it, I responded, bewildered and wary, in the only way I knew how: by planting it there myself.”
Tana French, In the Woods

“What I am telling you, before you begin my story, is this -- two things: I crave truth. And I lie. ”
Tana French, In the Woods

“The girls I dream of are the gentle ones, wistful by high windows or singing sweet old songs at a piano, long hair drifting, tender as apple blossom. But a girl who goes into battle beside you and keeps your back is a different thing, a thing to make you shiver. Think of the first time you slept with someone, or the first time you fell in love: that blinding explosion that left you cracking to the fingertips with electricity, initiated and transformed. I tell you that was nothing, nothing at all, beside the power of putting your lives, simply and daily, into each other's hands.”
Tana French, In the Woods

“Maybe she, like me, would have loved the tiny details and inconveniences even more dearly than the wonders, because they are the things that prove you belong.”
Tana French, In the Woods
