The Ultimate Guide on How to Publish a Poetry Book

Poetry is one art form that has always been meant to be shared. Poets use this medium to express their observations, experiences, and emotions through powerful words. So it makes sense that many poets want to publish their work and share it with other readers.
However, thanks to capitalism and the "dying" art of poetry, it can be difficult to know how to get your art into the world. Thankfully, self-publishing has become an easier way for poets to share a collection of their work, and many tra...

Why I Went With Self-Publishing vs Traditionally Publishing for my Poetry Book

If you're ready to publish your poetry book, there are two main paths ahead of you if you want to get your collection out there: traditional vs self-publishing.
When I put my first debut poetry collection, seven years, together, I was determined to traditionally publish it. I viewed traditional publishers as the stamp of approval and saw it as a milestone that I had to reach to be considered a "real author." I had dreamed of it since I was a child.
So I found some publishers who published po...

Top Poetry Publishing Mistakes I Made: What You Can Avoid

I have a confession to make.
I'm a perfectionist.
I struggle with having mistakes, but I'm going, to be honest with you.

But this is a learning process, and I will use these mistakes to know what to not do in the future. And I want to help other poets avoid these mistakes as well.
Keep reading, and I'll fill you in on the mistakes I made and how you can avoid them in your self-publishing journey.

How Much Does It Cost to Self-Publish Your Poetry Book: A Full Cost Breakdown

You may have decided to self-publish your poetry book in order to get more royalties than a traditional publisher would offer you. It sounds like a great idea, but what many poets don't realize is that it is too good to be true.
Because when you self-publish, you’re responsible for all of the costs upfront. A traditional publisher is great because they will manage all of the costs (and work) upfront, so you don’t have to worry about it.
But there is some good news. Self-publishing your book ...

How to Find Inspiration for Your Poems

So you wanna be a poet, but then you realized that you have no idea how to actually start writing poetry. It sounded like a great idea to be a poet when writing poems was easy, when inspiration just struck and the poem wrote itself. All you had to do was hold the pen or type on the keys.
But unfortunately, that's not a great long-term solution. It's a trap that many poets fall into, myself included. I loved when inspiration struck me, even at the most random times, and handed me the perfect po...

How to Grow Your Poetry Following on Instagram

Instagram has ,1 billion monthly active users on the app. This makes it an excellent place for poets to reach a larger audience. Rupi Kaur was one of the first poets to grow a large following on the app, but now many other poets are following in her footsteps.
While the poetry niche has more competition than usual, many traditional publishers ask you for your social media handles. One of the added measures of whether a poet will be successful for a publisher is if they ...

I've been working on this book for seven years (coincidentally), and after receiving so much encouragement from friends and family, I finally decided to put this collection out into the world. It is both scary and exciting at the same time to put your poetry out into the world not knowing how other people will receive it. But I started writing this book because poetry helped me through so much, and I wanted to be able to do the same for other people. This book actually contains some of the first poems I had ever written.
But what is this book about? Is it right for you? Who should buy it? Here's a quick summary of the poetry inside:
People say that each cell in your body replaces itself after seven years. After that, you are physically and mentally a new person. "seven years" is Alyssa Harmon's debut collection of poems on heartbreak and healing. Each chapter represents a new stage in the relationship and healing process, and these poems tell the story of a failed relationship and the healing journey that resulted. If your heart was broken in a way that you’re not sure can be healed, this book is for you.
