I joined online groups and I read everything I could find on autism in adults (and autism in…moreWhen I received my autism diagnosis it was a huge relief. I joined online groups and I read everything I could find on autism in adults (and autism in women). I read lots of memoirs, which were really insightful and engaging but left me with lots of ‘why’ and ‘how’ questions. As an autism researcher working in a university, I read lots of academic journal articles, which provided detailed scientific information but didn’t connect to my lived experience. I wanted a book that described different aspects of what it is like to be autistic, explaining the characteristics referred to in the literature but in a way that was more human and made sense to me as an autistic person. Then my son’s psychologist said to me “you should write one”…. It took me a couple of years, but I eventually wrote the book I wanted to read when I was diagnosed, and I really hope it fills that gap for other autistic people.(less)

I don’t usually read these ‘self-help’ books but actually found this really interesting and informative (and yes, helpful). I struggled with some of the ‘talk to your inner child’ aspects and similar parts but overall well worth persevering with

Hmmm…listening to the end when they talked about the ‘true story’ that inspired the book I couldn’t help wondering why they flipped the gender roles in the fictional version and had the male being the adventurous risk taker
