This is written for autistic people in, or planning to enter the workplace, and addresses common issues and challenges. It is also for colleagues and supervisors, and addresses how they can make the workplace more inclusive - as well as emphasising the strengths of autistic employees. (less)

I joined online groups and I read everything I could find on autism in adults (and autism in women). I read lots of memoirs, which were really insightful and engaging but left me with lots of ‘why’ and ‘how’ questions. As an autism researcher working in a university, I read lots of academic journal articles, which provided detailed scientific information but didn’t connect to my lived experience. I wanted a book that described different aspects of what it is like to be autistic, explaining the characteristics referred to in the literature but in a way that was more human and made sense to me as an autistic person. Then my son’s psychologist said to me “you should write one”…. It took me a couple of years, but I eventually wrote the book I wanted to read when I was diagnosed, and I really hope it fills that gap for other autistic people.(less)

“The cumulative impact of constant self-doubt and anxiety, combined with the physical and emotional scars from forcing myself to ‘cope’ in a world that isn’t built for people like me, has taken a considerable toll on my health and wellbeing.”
Sandra Thom-Jones, Growing in to Autism

“The more other areas of my life become unpredictable, the more my routines become essential and keep me from feeling like the world is spinning out of control.”
