Martyn is a former lawyer. He spent many years in private legal practice in Cambridge (England). He has also worked as an in-house lawyer at two universities, taught on the postgraduate Legal Practice Course, and owned his own company providing legal consultancy services. Before law, he was a dealer in second-hand books, specialising in crime and detective fiction. He also used to write regularly about crime fiction for 'Book and Magazine Collector'.
