Diamond in the Rough
As I wrap up my serialized novel to launch on Kindle Vella next month, I can't help but think of its distant cousins—unfinished novels, stories, scripts, poems, character sketches, & random ideas—whiling away the time in file cabinets, boxes, & on digital gadgets. Of course, I could go the philosophic route by claiming they were all part of my process getting to this point or that they somehow had a cumulative effect on such & such a plotline or character arc or whatnot.
But the truth of the matter is I'm never sure which one, if any, will draw my attention after the first episodes of my current project see the light of day. Maybe I'll start a completely new story based on a passing thought or my fantasy verbal takedown of an irresponsible driver zooming past pedestrians in a library parking lot or a friend reminiscing about bygone days.
Or maybe, just maybe, I'll rummage around one of those caches & stumble onto a favorite fictional diamond in the rough the way I did after finishing Pearl Fields and the Oregon Meltdown.
I'll keep you posted.
