Helene Harrison studied at the University of Northumbria in Newcastle, achieving both a BA and MA in History before going on to complete an MSc in Library Management. Her passion for Tudor history started when studying for A Levels and completing a module on Tudor rebellions. Her master’s dissertation focused on portrayals of Anne Boleyn through the centuries, from contemporary letters to modern TV and film adaptations. Now she writes two blogs, one Tudor history and one book-related, and works in the university library of her alma mater. In her spare time, she loves visiting royal palaces and snuggling up with a book or embroidery project. Her books are ‘Elizabethan Rebellions: Conspiracy, Intrigue and Treason’ [2023] ‘Tudor Executions: Fr ...more

This time we are discussing her new book Princesses of the Early Middle Ages: Royal Daughters of the Conquest. I have to admit it’s not a period, and these […]

“One noble died of treason, but there was always another who would continue plotting. Treason remains on the statute book, enshrined in law today, though not an oft used law. When we think of treason and tyrannical monarchs, Henry VIII is usually pretty high on the list. He redefined treason to be what he wanted it to be and, as a result, opened the doors to multitudes of treason trials and the depletion of the English nobility.”
Helene Harrison, Tudor Executions: From Nobility to the Block

“It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live.”
J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

“Does not everything depend on our interpretation of the silence around us?”
Lawrence Durrell, Justine

“Wisdom is oft-times nearer when we stoop
Than when we soar.”
William Wordsworth, The Excursion 1814

“Grief does not expire like a candle or the beacon on a lighthouse. It simply changes temperature.”
Anthony Rapp, Without You: A Memoir of Love, Loss and the Musical 'Rent'

“If you are lazy, and accept your lot, you may live in it. If you are willing to work, you can write your name anywhere you choose.”
Gene Stratton-Porter, A Girl of the Limberlost
