Know that in order to become a published writer, you'll end up throwing out hundreds, perhaps thousands, of pages. Know that revision--revising, optimizing, critiquing, reconceiving--is where good writing comes from. Strive to find a balance between glorying in the power of your own writing and becoming dissatisfied with it, seeing through its weaknesses. Write what you need to write, then walk away. Let it settle. Come back, reread, edit, and improve it incrementally. Repeat the process. Eventually, if you're lucky, the words will stay put and look right. (less)
