Assessment of RT 2014

This year the Romantic Times Convention was held in my stomping ground, New Orleans. The location was ideal for a congregation of romance writers, readers, and industry enthusiasts. Not only is Nola the birthplace of jazz, but it has a rich history steeped in paranormal culture, dark romance, and indulgence. My initial experience was exciting. The welcome event was a wonderful opportunity to meet new people and begin the networking process. The types of sessions were varied. From craft to promotion, there was something for everyone. Aspiring writers were able to learn new writing structures and experienced authors were able to learn a greater understanding of promotion. With those positives being recognized, I have to discuss my lack of enthusiasm for some of the sessions I attended. While it was a pleasure to meet experienced authors sometimes the panels were full of comedic banter and less focused on the informational portion of the session. It was a joy to meet Lisa Kleypas and have the opportunity to ask her about her writing process. She was very informative and shared a few insights into her vast experience in the business. The workshop led by Robin Perini was probably my favorite. Her techniques for making a good book great were thought provoking. She had the audience participate in exercises which was helpful for the writers in the group. The highlight of the week was the breakfast I was able to attend with my publisher, Loose Id. I had the opportunity to meet very talented and friendly authors that I admire. It was a pleasure to talk to Kele Moon, Cara Bristol, Tara Lain, Belinda McBride, Cheryl Dragon, and many more. The book fair was fun, however the set up wasn't ideal. Two rooms, long lines, and a horribly long wait made the event tough, but worth every moment to meet some of my favorite authors. From Debra Anastasia to Amy Lane, it was a treat to talk to the writers. One author in particular made my week. Megan Hart hosted a get-together in her hotel room that was fun and exciting. The guests received free books and swag, as well as the opportunity to have our books signed. Overall, the convention was worth the money for me due to the networking. The workshops could've been  better, but the highlights, as well as the city, were a joy to experience.

The History of the Venetian Carnival Mask

Mardi Gras is famous for several novelties-The King Cake, the infamous colorful beads, the grand parade, and the mystery characters behind the  colorful carnival masks. Whether you're a woman wanting to seduce a young man or a gentleman wanting to swoon a lady into a passionate kiss, the mask allows all taboos to be brought out of the shadows and into the world of seduction.
The Carnival mask has a long history steeped in rich Venetian culture. During the Renaissance in the seventeenth century the Venice carnival encouraged licence and pleasure , but was also used as a distraction during the depression of the times until the King of Austria outlawed the festival in 1797. The masks were then forbidden. The nineteenth century brought a resurgence of the carnival and the tradition of the mask.
The masks were made of various materials. From leather to porcelain to glass, the original mask was made to keep the wearers identity hidden while he or she enjoyed the festivites. Today the masks are celebrated for the same purpose. Whether in Venice or New Orleans the carnival is a time to find one's alter ego and let all inhibitions fall into the abyss.
The masks vary in design and style. There are many genres, each demonstrating ecclectic characterists and embelishments.

The Bauta mask is designed to comfortably cover the entire face. An over prominent nose, projecting chin line, and no mouth characterize this mask. This was a mask to disguise members of the Venetian government.

The Columbina mask is a half-mask, only covering the wearer's eyes, nose, and upper cheeks. This mask was created for a beautiful actress who didn't want her face entirely covered. While the mask began as a woman's party favor, it is widely worn by both men and women today.

The Medico della peste mask is familiar to most with it's elongated beak. This mask has more practical roots. It began as a mask worn to prevent the spread of disease. While worn by physicians to treat patients suffering from the plague, it's worn today as a grotesque respresentation of the Venetian style mask.

The Moretta muta mask was a small strapless black velvet oval mask with no lips or mouth holes worn by patrician women. Women would bite on a button beneath the mask to keep them from speaking therefore furthermore concealing their identity.

The Volto is the iconic modern Venetian mask. It's commonly worn with a tricorn or cloak. This mask covers the entire face. It depicts the simple facial features like the nose and lips.

The Pantalone is a classic from the Italian stage. This mask is a representation of the father figure. It signifies intelligence on the stage.

Over the years the mask has come to symbolize many characters, from the physician to the politician the masks purpose has been to hide the identity of it's wearer by means of protection from disease or to seduce the throng of festival participants. The mascherari, or mask maker, has given the Mardi Gras culture it's distinctive mysterious spin. It's Les Carnaval! Laissez les bons temps rouler!

Please Welcome Tim Smith

Please help me welcome Tim Smith. His exciting new release, Warning Shot, will keep you on the edge of your seat with suspense and quick wit. Set in the beautiful back drop of the Florida Keys, this book is guaranteed to heat up your nights and keep your heart racing.

Nick Seven and Felicia Hagens left the CIA for the laidback ease of the Florida Keys, leaving behind a life of intrigue. When Nick’s former mentor becomes part of a conspiracy with international repercussions, Nick breaks his self-imposed exile to stop him. The case throws Nick and Felicia into a juggernaut of espionage, government cover-ups and political assassinations. Will they succeed in stopping the plan in time? Can their relationship survive another unwanted adventure?

I’m pleased to announce the release of my newest romantic thriller Warning Shot from eXtasy Books. This is the third installment in the Nick Seven spy series, featuring my two most popular characters, former CIA spooks Nick Seven and Felicia Hagens. They were featured in the best-selling books Memories Die Last and Never Look Back. Although this is part of a series, the books do not need to be read in order, as each one is a stand-alone adventure.

For the uninitiated, Nick and Felicia live in Key Largo, Florida, where they fled to get away from the spy game and intrigue. Nick is a moody action hero plagued by memories of things from his past, and Felicia is the Barbadian beauty who was once his co-worker. This installment finds them helping Nick’s former mentor from his spy days when it appears that this person has gotten involved in something he shouldn’t have.

I think this is the fastest-paced thriller I’ve ever written, with something for everyone – action, great atmosphere, realistic characters and dialogue, humor, and enough heat between Nick and Felicia to make Key West in July feel like Alaska. There’s also a very strong romantic element between the two leads, one that keeps evolving and getting stronger with each new episode. Here’s an example:

Nick brought Felicia’s hand to his mouth then kissed it. “That’s one of the reasons I’m glad I have you around. You always keep me focused.”

“Is that the only reason you’re glad I’m around?”

“No, but it’s a long list.”

She sat on his lap then ran her fingers through his hair. “I’ve got nothin’ but time, Tough Guy.”

He caressed her cheek “You’re resourceful, self-confident and independent.”

“You just described a Boy Scout. Can’t you do better than that?”

He kissed her. “You’re incredibly hot, passionate about everything and waking up next to you makes all my teenaged dreams come true.” He paused. “Plus you make a mean stir-fried shrimp.”

Felicia laughed and lightly smacked his arm. “Is that the best you’ve got? You were always better at foreplay.”

“You make me feel alive and I can’t wait to start every day all over again with you.”

She cupped his cheek and peered into his eyes. “That’s what I was gonna say. It’s kinda hard to explain but when I first saw you, all that time ago in London, it was like a jolt of electricity went through me. Then when you quit and I went back to Barbados, I felt this big empty inside, like somethin’ vital had been taken away.”

He traced her jaw with his fingers. “Same thing I felt. I’m glad we finally got together.”

                                                                         * * * *

I’ve been asked why I chose the Florida Keys as the setting for this series. When I sat down to write the first one, I asked myself a question – if I were a former spy who wanted to start over, where would I go? Since I had recently returned from a trip there, the answer was obvious. The atmosphere lends itself to anonymity, because people basically don’t care who you are or where you came from. In doing research I discovered that the Keys have a lot of former cops and government operatives among its nameless residents. That sealed it for me.

If you’re looking for an escape from the winter cold, take a trip to the Florida Keys with Nick and Felicia in Warning Shot. It’s a fun ride!

The Soul Of Your Book Is Embedded In Your Voice

I posted this particular entry for Love Lust and Laptops last year. I thought it spoke to the heart of what writers needed to explore to take their writing to a new level, to find that soulful nature in the words they put to paper. I summed up what publishers are seeking when it comes to manuscripts. The single essence of putting words together is formed by the glue that connects the sentences. That glue is the author's "voice".

“Be the Architect of Your Story”

There’s a term in publishing. The word is elusive, coveted, and unique. Well, if you plan on selling any books you better damn hope it’s unique. Voice. The word has slipped across your ears a thousand times, but in writing the word is pivotal. Critical. If crafted, it’s the one word that will get you bee-lined to an editor’s desk. If your voice is fragmented or lost. The manuscript you’ve slaved over for two years falls into the slush pile with the millions of other wanna be novels that didn’t declare a voice. No voice. No contract.

The concept of the writer’s personal voice is essential for any genre, but unmistakably invaluable when writing erotic romance. The reader plays a movie in her/his head and senses the tone of the book according to the writer’s voice. The weaving of a writer’s craft is a direct reflection of how an author relays everything from how the character sips from a glass of wine to how she puts her bra on in the morning. Every word is constructed from our personality, experiences, and nuances all rolled into one.

When writing erotic romance/romance we draw from experience. All of us have had bad, unhealthy relationships. The way we build a story reflects those feelings about the highs and lows of that union. It’s the subconscious spilling out on the pages. The plot is determined by the journey of our life. In erotic romance it is imperative that the reader make an emotional connection with the characters. If they are not feeling the heroine’s angst and the heroes self-torment then they quickly lose the connection with the book. You have to bond with your characters. They have to speak your voice to the reader through them.

When I received my first contract I asked my publisher, “Why me? Why this book?” When I read the email I was floored. She said it was my voice  that had struck the editor. My voice? What in the hell did that mean? I dove into research about this voice concept. During this process I discovered that I did in fact have a distinct voice. The development of a voice is two-fold. One, you can’t wa-la have a voice overnight. Your uniqueness develops over time. And two, once you have discovered the motivation behind your style the sky is limitless. Remember. Sell your voice. Sell your book.

Just as Gena Showalter adds humor to her stories, and J.R. Ward adds kick-ass-ed-ness to her books, I add a tone of darkness to my novels. I work off the concept of the sacred and profane. I was a religious study major in college so every book I write has an undercurrent of the sinfully forbidden and quiet redemption of crushed souls. I, at first unknowingly, craft characters that appear to be too broken to be put back together. Somehow by the end of the book they are not perfect, but they gain self-acceptance and see the light leading them to happiness. I push the boundaries of what is acceptable, both for the reader and the publisher.

In See Me there is a scene regarding rape and attempted murder of the heroine. In Gilded Lily, set in the heart of Louisiana, the shacks on the property have a horrific history. My next two projects push those boundaries again delving into suicide, mental illness, infidelity, drug use, and prostitution. I must add that peppered through these dark threads are points of humor. I honestly have no idea where these little nuggets originate, but they just seem to appear. Again, the subconscious playing its part.

A productive task when learning the style of your voice is to write down certain events in your life that have affected you. Correlate those events to a feeling you experienced. Do you see a thread? Is there a common theme of how you reacted, dealt with those situations? Now, brainstorm a list of story concepts. Same thing goes. How would these scenarios play out in reference to how you handled the real life experiences? Do you use humor as a coping mechanism? Are you quick to get angry? Do you problem solve quickly? Do you laugh at your own mistakes? These emotions are embedded in who you are and can be siphoned into the natural dialogue and essence of your character’s personalities.

Read several books by your favorite authors. Those books are on your keeper shelf because you bonded with the author’s voice. You somehow connected with the tone of the book. Let’s be honest here. How many ways can a vampire find his human, a wolf find his mate, or a captain rescue his woman from the hands of a pirate? This isn’t rocket science when looking at sweeping romantic themes. So, why do you choose Lisa Kleypas’s over Charlotte Featherstone or Cara Bristol over Cherise Sinclair? You connect with the way the writer speaks to you. Think of the voice as the soul of the story. While we can construct plot, arcs, appearance of the characters, the nature of the story is buried somewhere deep in yourself.

The most emotional and gripping storytellers can’t tell you where exactly their style originated. They can tell you they wrote a scene because it was funny to them. It was heart breaking to them. Or it was scary as hell to them. The essence of those feelings make the exciting world of the writer’s voice.

So remember, when you’re preparing a manual for submission, are you in this story? Are your feelings hidden in the pages? If not, rethink the tone of the book and study yourself to make the pages shine.

If nothing else, take this piece of advice and tuck it in your thoughts when you sit in front of your next manuscript. No voice. No contract.

Please Welcome AJ Wiliams

Please help me welcome A.J. Wiliams, the author of the suspenseful romance series Bounty for Hire. A.J., thank you so much for being here.

The exciting new installment in the Bounty for Hire series is Bounty for Love. Tell us about this new book.

Thanks so much for having me.

Bounty for Love continues where the first book Bounty for Hunter started. Bounty for Love follows Tess and Alek as they work to prove her brothers innocence as well as keep dangers from Tess. Bounty for Love is also full of secrets and what Tess and Alek do with those secrets.

What do you find is Alek's sexiest quality?

That is a hard question. Alek has this aura around him that screams bad ass. So I have to say for myself it is that. There is nothing like know you have a bad ass at your side that makes you feel safe.

What is the theme that holds the Bounty for Hire series together?

The theme of the book is one event pulling four books together. The first three books take place at the same time but follow different people. In the end of Bounty for Love we get a glimpse into Jefferson's story. What is it like for  one story to take place from several different views?

What qualities do you feel makes a believable and endearing heroine?

That question is really based on not just the author but the reader. For myself I find heroines that are strong and yet at the same time there are moments where they show a vulnerability. Readers might not like the switch but I love it. It reminds me of real women.

I've heard many editors say writing sex scenes is a lot  like writing fight scenes, know where each body part is at all times! Do you find writing intimate love scenes easy or challenging?

Hmmm great question. I honestly would rather write a love scene then a fight scene. In a love scene you know the body parts that are affect and where touches would work. Love scenes there are a lot of emotions that go into the writing, but those emotions feel natural.

Are there any authors who have inspired your personal writing style?

Not yet, but that isn't to say that there won't be in the future.

What do you like to do in your spare time? Do you have any favorite hobbies or ways you clear your head and relax?

I love playing with my two kids. My kids really help to keep me balanced. Between tea parties, and lego wars I have lots of time to relax, or maybe not relax lol I guess it is in how you look at it.

I read that music is a large muse for your writing process. I too really enjoy Lana Del Ray (my favorite song is This Is What Makes Us Girls). Tell us how music has sparked your creativity and played a role in your writing.

I love music. Music does play a huge role in my writing. It can be the words of the song or just the beat that gets me worked up. If I am writing a story I really listen to the beat of the moment. There are a few songs that get me worked up. In Bounty for Hunter it was I'm not afraid by Eminem. That was my theme song for Keylee. For Bounty's End it was several actually. Bounty for Love  it was Staind's So Far Away

What advice would you give to new writers?

Write every day. Even if is just a few lines. Write, then go back and make changes when you are done writing the whole story. Have a good beta reader that will tell you when you suck and when something is great.

Other than that trust in your story.

Now it's time for fun! Every guest to my blog gets a series of rapid fire question. A.J., here's yours.

Vampires or Werewolves: Werewolves

Hot Coffee or Hot Tea: Hot Tea

Dogs or Cats: Cats

Italy or India: Italy

Sail Boat or Yacht: Sail Boat

Thank you so much for, A.J., for stopping by. It's been a pleasure learning about your unique style of writing and your new release Bounty for Love.

AJ grew up in a small southern town in Missouri. It was there that she discovered her love of writing. Having the ability to create a story from nothing into something held her spell bound. She holds a bachelor’s degree, and will on occasion find it useful. Currently, AJ lives in Kansas City, Missouri with her husband and 2 small children and their two dogs.

Her very first story was a poem about the sun ending and the moon beginning which she wrote when she was ten. Since that time her stories have taken on their very own life. She writes stories that make you think about real life, the 'what if' this happened to me scenario. “There is a story in all of us” is a favorite saying of AJ’s.

AJ loves learning about new things, playing games with her family and listening to music. She loves romantic movies as well as science fiction. If truth be told, she loves fantasy and science fiction movies just a little bit more.

At any given time she can be found reading to her kids, instilling in them the importance of a good story. Yet do not worry; she is also found by her kids and husband at the computer typing away.

Melting Cold Winter Nights With Nicole Morgan

Get comfy , grab a cup of coffee, and get ready for a hot interview sure to melt the snow off your rooftop. Nicole Morgan is with me today as we welcome in the holidays with a new Christmas anthology releasing today from The Four Seduced Muses , an imprint of Sassy Vixen Publishing .

Your new release, Tis the Season for Seduction , is a winter themed anthology hitting the shelves today. The book is written by a group of very talented authors. First, let's talk about the Four Seduced Muses. Tell us how you came to be the Seductress of the group.

Actually Four Seduced Muses was my idea. <insert glares from my fellow muses> LOL Seriously, I had an idea that I wanted to do something different than the typical author blogs that were out there today. So, I reached out to a few authors who were fellow Siren Publishing authors and were also of like minds as me and together we came up with concepts, the name and the themes. While our schedules have really picked up lately and we haven’t spent as much time on it as we usually do, that will soon change! There are some exciting things in the works and in 2014 for us all!!

Your story, Christmases Past, focuses on a troubled marriage and a husband who travels through the winter weather to fight for the love of his wife. I believe many women and men can relate to the turmoil of these characters. What was your inspiration for this story?

Oh man… you lead with the difficult questions already? Who are you? Barbara Walters? LOL I’m only teasing. I think the real inspiration came from having written about so many hot and passionate relationships that I wanted to tell a story that wasn’t filled with all roses and daisies. I wanted to show the real life turmoil that couples – especially married couples – can face when real life get in the way.

Using only one sentence, how would you describe the hero in Christmases Past? Let's do the same for the heroine.

Priscilla – Cilla is a woman who came from money, but only ever wanted love.

Max – Max is a man who reinvented himself and spends his life trying to prove he deserve his wife.

All writers seem to be drawn to a certain author that inspired them to put the words to paper. Do you have a particular author who inspired you?

Do I have an author who inspired me? Umm…no…several maybe, but not just one. I would say that a few of the tops would be Suzanne Brockman, Sasha White and Maya Banks.

You have written many series books featuring sexy heroes who protect and serve. What do you think makes these types of heroes so popular in erotic romance?

Umm…because they’re HOT! Duh! LOL Seriously though, I think most women want that hero type of guy who will rescue them. Whether it’s from a real bad guy, or rescuing from your bad day. I found my real life hero and can tell you that there are many ways he rescues me on a daily basis. Even from myself sometimes. *winks*

As a reader, what quality of a book makes it go on the "keeper" shelf?

Honestly, I don’t know. I rarely get rid of books so I think for me most books are keepers. I would have to say a non-keeper might be one that I think sends a bad message to readers.

Every writer has a process. How is your creative muse sparked? Where does your inspiration come from?

Hmm… let’s see. There are the voices in my head, crazy a*ss dreams, voices in my head, sights, sounds, smells and oh, did I mention the voices in my head? What? I’m not “crazy” or anything. At least not clinically. Well, that might not be entirely true either. I mean, I’ve never quite been “tested” or anything like that. Let us move on, shall we? LOL

Aspiring authors always like to hear "the call" story. Tell us about your journey to your first publication.

Well, I got the email just before I was rushing my ex husband to the emergency room for…hmm…what in the heck was wrong with him again? Oh yeah… a lot! LOL. Just kidding. But, it was a loooooooooong time ago. And my first publisher experience wasn’t great. I eventually got the rights back and took the story to a much more reputable and amazing brand at Siren Bookstrand, Inc.

It's time for the fun Rapid Fire questions!

Snowman or Santa – Santa!

Daffodils or Roses – Both! I like bouquets that have a variety of different flowers. J

Milk Chocolate or Dark Chocolate – Milk! Mmmm…

Coffee or Tea – Both! But, usually coffee!

North East or South West – South West!

Nicole, I've really enjoyed having you here today. It's been fun sharing insight into your writing process and learning about your new release Tis the Season for Seduction.

Excerpt

Several minutes passed and he simply leered up at her, remaining perfectly still as she slowly and expertly fucked him. Her beautiful tits bounced and swayed with her graceful and heavenly movements.

He reached up and cupped each one of her breasts in his hands. Massaging and squeezing, he brushed his thumbs across her nipples, working them into hard nubs. He wanted to lift push himself up and take one in his mouth, nibbling and sucking on one and then the other. Selfishly, he couldn’t take his eyes off of her, though.

His continued manipulation of her nipples pushed her to the next level. She moaned and quickened her pace. He was mesmerized by her and could have stared at her for hours moving against him like some sort of sex-starved goddess. His own lust wouldn’t allow it. He had to move with her. He needed to feel her body tremble.

He thrust hard, pushing himself deep inside. Her body jolted and her eyes dropped back down to his. He didn’t stop, didn’t wait for her to protest. With his left hand still working her tit and pinching her nipple, he dropped his right hand down and slid it into the heat between their bodies.

Her pussy was drenched, soaking from her passion and he had every intention of using that to his advantage. He slipped his thumb into her slit and with little effort found her clit, already swollen and sensitive as he started to pluck at it.

A provocative moan filled the room and he knew that he’d brought her to the point of no return. She bucked in pleasure as he continued to drive into her, all the while strumming her clit. He didn’t move slowly, or work her softly. He took her exactly like she liked it and exactly how he needed it.

The sounds of skin slapping against skin filled the room. It echoed and mingled with the seductive noises that tore from his Cilla. He had heard many types of music in his days, but nothing came close to the sex filled symphony that they created together.

His cock throbbed underneath her piercing hold. The walls of her pussy encapsulated him. He never knew anything could hurt so damn good until he had his Cilla. Never did he grow tired of losing himself in her. The way their bodies fit, the way they were able to love one another, and fuck one another all at the same time. If the possibility of heaven on earth existed, he’d found it with her.

Please Welcome Karen Mueller Bryson

I'm sincerely honored to host Karen Mueller Bryson, Ph.D. Karen is an award-winning, Amazon best-selling author. Ms. Mueller Bryson can also add to her accomplishments screen play writing, play writing, and founder of ShortOnTime books. Some of you may know Karen as Dakota Madison. Please welcome this amazing writer and advocate.

Gosh, Karen, where to start? I have so many exciting questions. I'll start off by asking about your books under the name Karen Mueller Bryson. You have managed to write such an eclectic realm of titles ranging from a book focusing on the survivors of loved ones who have committed suicide to the story of an incredible roller derby queen. How do you choose topics in which to write about?

Sometimes I feel like I don’t choose topics, they seem to choose me! For example, I didn’t actively pursue writing a biography of Roller Derby Queen Cindy McCoy. I was actually asked by a screenwriting associate of mine if I would consider working on the project after he wrote the screenplay of her life story. At other times, things will come to me in dreams. For example, the idea for my kids’ time travel story, The Incredibly Awesome Adventures of Puggie Liddell, came to me in a series of dreams.

When writing screenplays, stage plays, romance, and non-fiction do you find yourself using different writing processes for each genre?

The process is usually similar. I tend to do more outlining for non-fiction books. I use very brief outlines for fiction books but I tend to become more emotionally involved in the stories and with the characters when I write fiction.

I noticed you have published several series books as Dakota Madison. The Fire and Ice, Match Play, and The Amulet of Mysteries series are all very popular. Do you prefer to write series books rather than "stand alones"?

I actually prefer to write stand-alone books. The Matchplay series only became a series because readers asked me to continue writing books for the characters. I have so many ideas for new books and I’m in middle age, so I don’t feel like I have enough time to write everything I want to write in the years I probably have left.

If you could pick a favorite heroine and hero who would those characters be and why.

My favorite couple, by far, is Kian Kavanagh and Taylor Thompson, from the Fire on Ice series. I think the reason I like them so much is that they are probably the closest in personality to me and my husband. The only reason I had the courage to write about a professional hockey player is because my husband is from Canada and he knows a lot about hockey.

Tell me about the twelve books in twelve months undertaking. It sounds very exciting!

After completing National Novel Writing Month in 2012, I had so much fun writing my first romance novel, I didn’t want to stop. So I decided to write a novel every month for a year. I completed novel twelve in October. The challenge was certainly one of the most difficult things I had undertaken but I have a lot to show for it!

You are a seasoned and professional author. New writers are always hungry for publishing and crafting wisdom. What advice would you give to an up and coming writer?

I would suggest writing every day. I get up every day between 4:30am and 5:00am and write for a few hours until I have to get ready for work. I don’t ever skip a day. I even write when  I’m on vacation and I write on Christmas morning.

I would also suggest reading every day. It’s important to immerse yourself in the genre in which you’re writing. It’s also important to understand what’s selling in your genre and why certain books sell better than others.

Please share with us your most difficult scene to write in your new release, After Alex Died.

The book is about a college student who is coming to terms with her brother’s suicide. She falls in love with one of the boys who bullied her brother. As a survivor of suicide myself, the book was cathartic to write. I feel that the book is more than just a romance novel. It’s a story about what it means to truly forgive another person.

What new projects are you currently working on?

I’m working on two new romance novels. Once deals with a woman who leaves her abusive husband and finds love again. The other is about kids who “age out” of the foster care system when they turn 18 and basically become homeless.

Now it's time for the rapid fire questions. These are a fun and quick way to get to know an author. Here goes...

Beach or Swimming pool?

I love the beach but I don’t swim in the ocean.

Rain or Sunshine?

I live in Arizona. It’s always sunny!

New Orleans or New York?

I like them both.

Lasagna or Enchiladas?

Depends who is making it! Probably lasagna.

Morning or Evening Writing?

I’m a morning person.

Thank you so much for being here today. It has been so wonderful talking with such an accomplished writer.

Please Help Me Welcome Jan Meredith

I'm so excited to have Jan Meredith with me today. Her new release Playing Doctor has launched the new print, Flaunt, from Entangled Publishing.

Thank you for having me, Pauline. It’s been an exciting time for me, not only releasing my debut book, but being included in the initial launch of Entangled’s sexy new imprint, Flaunt is a dream come true.

How exciting to be on the forefront of launching a new print. What made you decide to use Flaunt as the launching pad for "Playing Doctor"?

Actually, when Playing Doctor was contracted with Entangled Publishing, it was under the Ever After imprint. Shortly after, there was some shifting of the imprints and Ever After was designated as a Paranormal novella, and the introduction of the Flaunt, a sexy new imprint was introduced. I was thrilled to be included in the initial launch. As a debut author, it was the icing on the cake of a dream come true.

I'm always interested in finding out the nuances of a book. What were the inspirations behind this book?

Doctors and nurses do all they can for their patients, but what about their own lives, their families, the things that go on behind closed doors? What if the doctor was a specialist and missed a life-threatening sign in his spouse which claimed her life, and that ailment was what he specialized in? Imagine the guilt he would sustain. Imagine an ER nurse brought in to her own ER, battered by her PTSD spouse. What happens when the wounds are so deep with this doctor and nurse that it keeps them from trying again. What if they found each other and something wonderful happened for them…if only for one night? I wanted to know these two people, to tell their story, and make it right for them. So I gave them one night to be free of the guilt and pain, to enjoy each other, and in the process, soothe their broken souls.

As for their muse, I saw Gabe as a compilation of two men: Chris Hemsworth and Dustin Clare—strong, long hair (which did not make it to the cover of the book, and my apologies for that) soft, dark eyes and a mischievous smile. He had to be vulnerable, reluctant to allow himself to feel again. He doesn’t “deserve” to feel after what happened with his wife. Again, I saw Beth as a cross between Sandra Bullock and Mila Kunis—petite, curvy, independent and in charge of her life, and unwilling to put herself in a position where another man could control her.

What has been your writing process when preparing and actually sitting down to type?

Honestly, I have no preparations. I’m a pantser, who has eventually learned the meaningfulness of outlines and plotting. After doing NaNoWriMo with Entangled Publishing and Savvy Authors last year, I learned the value of having a synopsis at the get-go. Now I’m a pantser who outlines and plots…then waits for the characters to tell me their story.

Author's have a voice imprinted on their work. Sometimes it's an underlying sense of humor or darkness in the characters. How would you describe your "voice"?

I love humor. I feel that without being able to see the lighter side of life, we miss so much. It helps to ease the darker times.

Tell us about your road to stardom. Many aspiring writers long to become published authors. How did you become published?

When I decided to give writing another go—I wrote years ago, and set it aside when life intervened—I did a Google search on writing contests and found that Harlequin was having an Editor’s Pitch contest for their M&B Medical romance imprint. All I needed to enter was a two-paragraph blurb. Five winners would be chosen to pitch their book in a ten minute on line chat with the editor.

As a nurse, this was right up my alley. I wrote the blurb for what was then titled, A Doctor In The House, and sent it in, never dreaming that I would be one of the chosen ones. After the pitch, I was asked to submit the first three chapters of the book. Those chapters garnered one of the most helpful two-page feedback rejection letters ever, with an invitation to write something else and submit it. However, Gabe and Beth were determined to have their story finished. I revised the chapters and sent them to three other publishers, all of whom asked for the full manuscript. Heather Howland was one of the editors, and her publisher, Entangled, was gearing up for the launch of their super sexy imprint, Brazen.

It took me several months, lots of Savvy Author workshops and another request for the manuscript from yet another editor (who was conducting the workshop I was currently doing) for me to finally finish the book, but as a longer novella instead of a full length. In the end, I was offered two contracts at the same time, but went with Entangled, as it had been my goal from the start.

What advice would you give to new writers?

Never give up. Write for yourself. Guidelines are there for a reason, but they shouldn’t be so strict that they stifle your ability to create. Research the market before you submit—know the publisher, what they want, what they offer. Connect with other authors and see what their experience with the publisher has been. Know the difference between a % of cover price and net returns in royalties.

If you could choose a favorite scene in "Playing Doctor" which scene would that be and why?

Where they make love in the bathroom. It’s a very sensually erotic moment for Beth, where she discovers that hands can be strong, yet gentle at the same time, and instead of feeling dominated by Gabe—his size, strength and the position in which they make love—she feels cherished and protected. It’s a very emotional scene for her.

Which genre do you prefer reading and what is your favorite book?

Touch question. As a Libra, I’m always pulled in two directions at once. I love the sexy contemporary romances, but I can’t resist a good paranormal romance, either. My all-time favorite book is, Acheron, by Sherrilyn Kenyon.

If there were two things you would want readers to know about your writing what would those be?

That I write “real” people stories, and there will always be a laugh or two tucked in there along with the hard times.

Okay, now it's time for rapid fire questions. These questions are a quick way to get to know an author and are fun to read.

Summer or Winter? Summer, although Autumn is my favorite season.

Pepsi or Coke? If it has to be dark, Coke, but I prefer Sprite or 7-Up.

Snickers or Milky Way? Yay! Love a chocolate question. Milk Way!

Pancakes or Waffles? Pancakes at Cracker Barrel; it’s no accident that Playing Doctor’s opening scene is at Cracker Barrel and that Beth is having pancakes. I’ve enjoyed many “morning after a night shift in the ER” breakfasts with coworkers there.

New Orleans or New York? Nawlins!

It has been great getting to know you, Jan. Thank you for stopping by and sharing your insight into writing and the exciting world of Playing Doctor.

Blurb:

When a fellow RN jokingly predicts that Beth Roberts will meet a tall, ripped and totally lick-o-licious stranger who will fulfill her deepest desires, it’s supposed to be from across a crowded room, not giving CPR to a wedding guest. Given her tragic love life, Beth has no desire to become involved again, but who could have predicted the ponytailed doctor with the mischievous smile would break through her defenses?

Dr. Gabriel North blamed himself for his wife’s death. Now, after two years of battling guilt and meaningless hookups, he’s ready to move on. When he sees the sexy brunette at his friend’s wedding, his attraction is swift and strong, and he wastes no time in pressing his advantage. One night with the woman who makes him feel alive again isn’t enough. Her confidence in him as a physician is unfailing, but getting her to trust the man is going to take more than medical school has prepared him for.

Excerpt:

As the sun set on the Montgomery Estate, ropes of sparkling white lights illuminated the gauzy tent’s ceilings, lending a cozy, more intimate ambiance. Caterers and wait staff filtered through the tables, lighting pillar candles that stood in crystal bowls.

The band switched from blood-pumping rock to slow, romantic tones, and a few couples swayed on the dance floor. A cool breeze drifted off the lake bordering the lush gardens, bringing with it the rich fragrance of honeysuckle and wildflowers. And Gabe.

From the corner of her eye, Beth watched him fake an elaborate yawn, stretching his arm over the back of her chair. When she lifted her brows at the wrist dangling over her shoulder, he grinned boyishly.

“This was my classic move in high school. It was pretty lame back then,” he admitted.

The corners of her mouth turned upward. “It’s still pretty lame.” But she allowed his arm to remain, enjoying the warmth, the weight of it across her shoulders. She missed this, the solid press of a man’s body against hers. Content, she rested against him and allowed her senses to soak him in.

She had almost walked away. Almost gotten in her car and driven back to the hotel. With Drew gone, there had been no reason to stay. Except for the fact that she wanted to. Then Gabe had taken her hand, asked her to stay…with him. For a moment, she’d thought her heart would jump right out of her chest. Could there be any stronger aphrodisiac than a man pleading for your presence?

He adjusted his arm over her shoulder, shifted his body, tucking her against his side.

“My next move would be to try and cop a feel.” Gabe flexed his fingers.

Reaching up, Beth snagged those fingers when he teasingly stretched them downward and slanted him a narrow-eyed warning. “Care to find out what my next move would be?”

Laughing, he took her hand, turned it slightly and ran his thumb over her ring finger. “Is there a man waiting for you at home?”

“No,” she answered, surprised—and pleased—by the bluntness of the question. “I’m widowed.”

“I’m sorry.” He gave her hand a comforting squeeze. “How long ago?”

Beth looked out at the lake, watched a crane dive, dip a wing into the water and slice the glassy surface. She was sorry, too, for the vibrant youth who had evolved into the troubled, bitter man.

“Four years,” she said, pulling away from the past. She thought of the snippets of information shared in the bride’s chambers—no social life to speak of and the redhead’s comment of his need to return to the land of the living. That didn’t necessarily mean there wasn’t a female in his life. “And you? Is there a woman waiting somewhere for you?”

A shadow darkened his eyes. “No, I lost my wife two years ago.”

Lost, she mused. Not, passed away, or she died. Not even, “I’m a widower,” but lost. The depth of his love, the weight of pain in his voice reminded Beth of her favorite song. She could see Gabe walking the streets at night, calling out his wife’s name, and again she wondered what it would feel like to be loved so deeply, wondered about the woman who had evoked and been the recipient of that love.

“I’m sorry.” She returned his gentle squeeze, then let go of his hand and reached for her drink.

The band announced the last dance and, eager to put thoughts of the past behind her, Beth turned her attention to the dance floor. The strains of When a Man Loves a Woman filled the air. Beth’s gaze landed on an elderly couple, or more specifically, on the old fellow’s hand as it slid down to squeeze his partner’s ass.

“Classic move,” Gabe chuckled.

As the couple shuffled by, the woman grabbed the hand on her bottom, pulled it up, and planted it firmly at her waist. Beth laughed. “I think that can be classified as an epic fail.”

“I’d like to think I have better moves than him, then.”

She’d just bet he did. Beth glanced up from beneath her lashes and gave in to the urge to play. “Really?”

“It’s true. I learned the hard way after high school that college girls were savvy. They expected more. I had to expand and add to my repertoire of seductive skills.”

Beth caught her lip between her teeth. “So, you’re going to try and dazzle me with your old college moves, now?”

“No, I pretty much bombed with those, as well.”

She doubted Gabe had ever bombed when he’d gone after a woman, and would have told him so, has she not lost the capability of speech when his warm breath washed over her cheek.

“I have all new moves, now. I particularly like this one,” Reclaiming her hand, Gabe’s gaze held hers as he skimmed the rough pad of his thumb over her knuckles with the same slow glide as his thigh rubbing against hers beneath the table. “What do you think?”

She couldn’t, at least not clearly. “That’s, um, pretty good.”

“Hmm. Pretty good? Well, how about this one?” He brought her hand to his mouth, looked into her eyes and pressed a soft, wet kiss to her palm.

Heat rippled under her skin. Her breath rushed out, a quick puff of surprise at how quickly, how intensely she responded to the touch of his mouth on her skin. Her mouth went slack, lids drifted down with the sheer force of sexual arousal assailing her. When she lifted them again, she allowed him to see exactly what she was feeling, what he was doing to her. She’d never been so bold and the decadence of it was exciting in itself.

She wanted more. “That’s a…really good move.”

His eyes dropped to her mouth and she felt his gaze there as surely as if he’d physically touched her. “I have more.”

And she wanted to experience each and every one of them.

Oh, God, what am I doing?

I’m doing what I want, and, I want to do it with this man.

With that resolve, Beth unlocked the door to her long suppressed desires and set them free. She tilted her head and tipped her lips into a taunting grin. “Would you like to see one of mine?”

 “Absolutely.”

She reached out, drove her fingers in his hair, cupped her hand at the base of his skull and pulled his mouth down to hers.

Surprise. She felt his brief pause of shock as their lips met, and then his hands came up, framed her face. His mouth shifted, encompassed hers, and possessed.

Heat. Had a man’s mouth ever felt so hot? Greed consumed her. Her fingers fisted in his hair and tugged. His groan slid past her lips and over her tongue. Blood pounded in her ears, flooded her sex. The sounds of the wedding reception faded away completely and nothing existed except Gabriel’s mouth on hers…and the person yelling his name.

Beth reluctantly broke the seal of their lips, slid her fingers free of the silky stands of his hair and sat back in her chair. She gave Gabe a look that was much steadier than she felt and licked the taste of him from her lips. “Someone is calling for you.”

“I don’t care.”

She would have laughed at the disgruntled reply if he didn’t look so serious and if she weren’t feeling every bit as frustrated as he appeared to be. Every fiber of her being wanted to grab his hand and run away, to hold on to this wonderful feeling for a little while longer. To take it even farther.

Then do something about it.

He beat her to the punch. “Let’s get out of here…get a drink.”

“Yes.” Her reply came out in a rush.

Someone called out his name again. When he grabbed her hand and pulled her to her feet, Beth expected to be led out of the tent, but he pulled her in, fisted his hand at the back of her jacket and took her mouth in a quick, hard kiss. “Let me change out of this tux and I’ll meet you at your car in ten.”

The sex-you-up grin was back, and it told Beth that Gabriel North had more on his mind than drinks.

Eating My Way Through The Quarter

New Orleans has a flare for bringing fine diners to a culinary cornucopia of spicy, sweet, decadent, and aromatic eats. My best friend and I visit Nola twice a year to satisfy our finicky palate for Southern food. Each bite tastes so much richer when eaten in a courtyard. The narrow brick streets host restaurants and bistros swelling with tantalizing scents of exotic spices and savory desserts. From bananas foster to seafood gumbo, the mouth watering smells tempt every person passing by.

A day in the life of a returning visitor holds a different itinerary for each person. The restaurants that I will discuss are our favorite places to kick back, have a drink, and enjoy great food. There are many great eateries to discover as you stroll along peeking into the window to see the paintings of the blue dog or hop into one of my favorite stores, Forever New Orleans. Whichever place you choose to stop for a meal several things are guaranteed. Great service, a laid back atmosphere, and a new friend around every corner.

The day starts at ten a.m. with breakfast at The Old Coffee Pot.

This restaurant is magnificent from the murals lining the quaint courtyard to the lavish inside dining area, boasting a beautiful cascading floral chandelier. The talented wait staff have voices that rival the great Aretha Franklin! From R.E.S.P.E.C.T to happy birthday...dear baby...happy birthday to...you. Every note is carried with love and pizazz. As for the food. Knock me out with a plate of lost bread loaded with powdered sugar and a healthy splash of warm maple syrup. A sweet breakfast to start the day.
On to the afternoon. By one p.m. we are sitting by the crumbling wall of the Napoleon House. Named as such because this is where Napoleon hid when he came to the States.

The table on the left is where we usually sit. The cheese and fruit platter pairs well with a glass of wine or a cold beer. The afternoons get warm and a light lunch is perfect to keep you energized for shopping and sight-seeing.
Preparing for the rambunctious nightlife can be fun and full of choices when deciding where to eat. The first choice for us is always Yo Mama's. By nine p.m. you can find us sitting in the back booth.

They are most famous for their mouth watering burgers, but I love to load up a giant size potato with cheese and bacon. Anne loves to bite into a burger loaded with cheddar cheese and crispy bacon. There's nothing better to start the evening than washing down a savory quick meal with a cold seven and seven. The juke box plays great old hits while laughter echoes throughout the narrow building.
The night ends on a high note...well, maybe low if you've indulged a bit too much. The Clover Grill will not only serve great diner food, but give you a colorful insight into life's lessons.

For instance...Anne and I were sitting at the counter when our waiter told us about how his girlfriend ran off with his savings and skipped town. He laughed and told us he was wearing his "save-a-hoe" cape when he met her. That was another great time in the quarter we'll never forget. Whether a grilled cheese and fries is what you need at three a.m. or a plate of eggs and toast, the Clover Grill is just what the doctor ordered.

Whether we are waiting for our table at Emeril's NOLA or walking into The Gumbo Shop, food in The Quarter is always served with a warm smile and a story to tell.

Welcome To The Dirty Birdies Blog Hop!

Provocative? Oh girls...I'm just getting started!

I'm talkin' eye candy. Let's get down to brass tacks here. There are some automatics to get out of the way. The "V". Hello. Given. Six pack. Given. Head full of gorgeous hair. Yeah, given. Two tickets to the gun show. Bought 'em. Now, it's my turn. I want to break down each of my dirty details. Yup, I like them dirty.   I mean filthy. The scent of sweat and old cologne, stale beer and transmission fluid. Oh, we don't talk about that. There's more ladies. Yeah, these are my secret eye candy fetishes. Guns, violence, a smart ass smirk, and a cocky attitude.   He's dangerous to everyone in world but me. He's lethal to good and bad guys alike. Carries a gun in the waistband of his faded jeans. You feel the hard handle as you hug your body flush against the power of his hard body. He's poison. He's on the run and I'm his Achille's heel. The taboo. The one thing that's a deal breaker. I was told I can't write this guy as a hero. He doesn't care what you think. He likes the way it feels rolled between his fingers, the way the filter teeters between his lips. He can talk as it bobs up and down against his mouth. The misty gray smoke billows as he tells you to get on the bed. Yes, it's him. The man who doesn't give a rat's ass as he lights up in the restaurant. Dabs the red hot bud into a glass ashtray. It's an oral fixation and I'm fixated on his oral.    Eye candy comes in all shapes and sizes. A woman's fetish is as personal as her choice in wine. We have traditional drooling images. The well-groomed man in the perfectly pressed suit. Our Dom. The artist prodigy who chooses us to be his nude model. Then, we have our secret fantasies. The men we keep hidden in the back of our psych to uncover in our weakest moments. These are the provocative ones. The men that make us drop to our knees and beg to submit. Cigarette between strong fingers, standing outside the shower, shirtless, covered in black grease as he waits for the water to warm, the gun he's pulled from his back pocket rests on the back of the toilet. Yeah...this is my "go to". This is my eye candy.

Thank you so much for stopping by! I hope you are enjoying being dirty and hopping along. Leave a comment and your email address to win a free e-copy of my new release Gilded Lily!

Happy Hopping!!
