The sun, low in the sky, sends a glare into his eyes, and the landscape around moves into the realm of the unreal. The reflex from the mirror-like water hypnotizes him, he seems to be unable to move, and all of a sudden it is as if he were floating in a bottomless void, sinking, sinking, and sinking.... Horror-stricken, he tries to stir, to cry out, but he cannot, he is completely paralyzed, he just falls and falls.”

“Si apoi, în sfârșit am dat de zăpadă și am văzut urmele celorlalți. Puteam să stau pe sanie și să mă odihnesc. Am rămas așa cu ochii închiși și i-am lăsat pe câini să-și bată capul cu drumul. Deodată, s-au grăbit înainte și s-au oprit și au început să mârâie unii la alții. Am deschis ochii și am descoperit ca mâncau ceva! Trebuie să fi fost carnea de bou moscat lăsată pentru mine! Am sărit de pe sanie și m-am aruncat în grămada de câini, luptându-mă ca un animal sălbatic pentru partea mea. Am apucat un os care încă mai avea carne pe el și am fugit înapoi la sanie. Am stat acolo o vreme și am tot mușcat din el ca dintr-un măr. M-am gândit că e piciorul din spate al boului, așa de moale și delicios era. Simțeam mirosul de carne de vită crudă și am tot mâncat cu ochii închiși, până am ajuns la un punct de picior care se simțea ciudat. Am deschis ochii și am descoperit că unghiile de pe piciorul unui câine îmi zgâriau fața.
Înhățasem un picior de câine, unul dintre cei pe care Knud fusese nevoit să-i omoare. Când am ajuns la locul în care își puseseră băieții cortul și le-am povestit ce pățisem, s-au zguduit de râs. Mai târziu, episodul a fost relatat de eschimoși ca cel mai comic lucru pe care-l auziseră vreodată. Povestea a ajuns în Groenlanda sudică înaintea mea.”
