Ed Burghard is an author, executive consultant, and place-branding authority whose career spans over three decades at the highest levels of global brand strategy.

Raised in Upstate New York, Ed earned a BA in theoretical mathematics from SUNY Potsdam and an MBA in innovation management with a minor in marketing from Syracuse University. An Eagle Scout, he began his career as a systems programmer and operations researcher before joining Procter & Gamble in 1982. During his 33-year tenure at P&G, Ed directed iconic U.S. and global pharmaceutical brands generating between $200 million and over $1 billion in annual revenue, leading major regional expansions across North America.

In 1999, Ed was named an inaugural Harley Procter Marketer—an elite global distinction awarded by P&G’s CEO and CMO to master practitioners after he doubled the pharmaceutical division’s sales and quadrupled its profits. In this role, he helped architect P&G’s corporate global brand-building framework, served as Dean of the Global Marketing Director College, and helped spearhead the redesign of P&G’s corporate identity.

In 2004, Ed was tapped to lead the creation of the Ohio Business Development Coalition (OBDC), serving as Chairman and Managing Director. His pioneering economic formula—Place Branding = Place Making + Place Marketing—helped transform the state’s approach to economic growth and earned him an appointment to the Executive Order of the Ohio Commodores by Governor Bob Taft.

After retiring from P&G in 2009 and transitioning state branding operations to JobsOhio in 2011, Ed turned his focus to writing and consulting. He and his wife, Claudia, have been married since 1978 and have two sons.
