Sean Penn's Tribute at Marrakech Film Festival Sparks Outrage Over Gay Kiss
I had the opportunity to cover the Marrakech Film Festival multiple times during my time in Morocco, and each year seemed to bring its own controversy. After later covering prestigious events like the Oscars and the Grammys, I realized how significantly the festivals in my country paled in comparison to the global standard of such events.
The most recent uproar occurred during Sean Penn's tribute at the festival. Following the tribute, the organizers screened Milk, a film starring Sean Penn, which initially seemed like a routine choice. However, the scene featuring a same-sex kiss between Sean Penn and James Franco caused a stir, sparking outrage among Moroccan attendees. Reports from local media indicate that a significant portion of the audience left the theater in protest, and footage of the backlash is included at the end of this article.
While Marrakech is internationally recognized for its vibrant gay tourism scene, it’s important to note that in Morocco, engaging in homosexual acts is punishable by imprisonment—unless one holds a foreign passport, which often provides a layer of protection.

Families of the 'Martyrs of Comera' Protest Director Asmae El Moudir’s The Mother of All Lies, Claiming Betrayal and Exploitation
Families of the 'Martyrs of Comera' Protest Director Asmae El Moudir’s The Mother of All Lies, Claiming Betrayal and Exploitation
The drama in Morocco continues, this time in the world of Moroccan cinema, where director Asmae El Moudir’s The Mother of All Lies is at the center of accusations of betrayal and exploitation. Below is the full translation of the article published by the well-known Moroccan media outlet H News
H News has learned that a protest took place this evening (Monday) in front of the Palais des Arts during the 24th edition of the Tangier National Film Festival. The protest was led by the children and families of the so-called “Martyrs of Comera,” who claim they were subjected to a “black lie” by director Asmae El Moudir.
According to testimonies from some family members of the victims of the 1981 events, many of them were subjected to “fraud and deception” by Asmae El Moudir, the director of the documentary White Lie (officially titled The Mother of All Lies in English), which explores the 1981 Moroccan riots. These riots, commonly known as the Casablanca bread riots, broke out on May 29, 1981, in Casablanca—a significant event during the Years of Lead under the rule of Hassan II of Morocco. The revolt was driven by sharp increases in the prices of basic food supplies, particularly bread.
The families claim that El Moudir presented herself as a journalist investigating the protests that took place in Casablanca, with the stated intention of reviving the issue of the bread riots. She reportedly portrayed herself as someone fighting to protect the victims' rights in this sensitive case, which led them to welcome her into their homes and share their stories and secrets. However, they later discovered that she had “deceived them” and was, in fact, a filmmaker who used their case to create a movie that garnered numerous awards and substantial support.
El Moudir's White Lie (officially The Mother of All Lies), which centers on the events of 1981 in Casablanca, received one million dirhams in support from the Moroccan Film Center (as an advance on post-production revenues) through her company, Insight Films. It also secured funding from 22 international sources and won prestigious awards at several international festivals, including Cannes.

Uproar in Morocco Over Minister Leila Benali and Australian billionaire Andrew Forrest's Infamous Kiss
All of Morocco is in shock over the infamous kiss between our minister Leila Benali and Australian billionaire Andrew Forrest. This is considered one of the biggest scandals so far. Not only is a public kiss inappropriate, but having such a scandal published by international media is another major issue. We Moroccans tend to handle our affairs discreetly, striving to maintain an immaculate image of our country—though one might wonder if such an image truly exists. If a Moroccan had published the picture, they would have faced severe consequences, but since it was done by foreigners, particularly those who are blond with blue eyes, we are left powerless. Aren't we all desperately seeking that coveted visa that foreigners grant us, despite the challenges in obtaining it?
Although I am not specialized in political matters, here is the translation of an article by my colleague, a talented Moroccan journalist. I believe the article is fair. We are both open-minded and don't care about the PDA (public display of affection) kiss. However, when the matter involves a conflict of interest and a deal signed by the Australian billionaire's company, which operates in energy and green hydrogen, with the OCP Group (OCP S.A.)—a state-owned company specializing in mining phosphate rock, manufacturing phosphoric acid, and producing fertilizers—it must be addressed, as this is highly suspicious, to say the least:
The Leila Benali Scandal: Silence Normalizes Corruption ( By Moroccan journalist Nora Fouari)
Today (Monday), May 27, 2024, public opinion was surprised by the "news" of a scandal reported by Australian and British media about a relationship between Energy Minister Leila Benali and Australian billionaire Andrew Forrest, along with the circulation of intimate photos allegedly showing them kissing in public in the French capital, Paris.
The minister's private life is not subject to public scrutiny. However, given her role as a public figure representing His Majesty's government, it is inappropriate for her to display affection publicly. Particularly when her actions involve a potential conflict of interest, such as a deal signed between the Australian billionaire's company, specializing in energy and green hydrogen, and The OCP Group (OCP S.A.), a state-owned enterprise engaged in phosphate mining, phosphoric acid production, and fertilizer manufacturing. This situation demands attention as it raises concerns of clear corruption.
As of the composition of these lines, Minister Leila Benali has not issued an official statement or communiqué, except for an unclear statement she mentioned in front of the camera of "Chouf TV" about a conspiracy against her for a year, without explaining any details. The government has also not provided any clarification about the news and photos, preferring the power of silence, waiting for a certain "excuse" to cover up this global "scandal" that has damaged the country's credibility, interests, and image before international public opinion.
Regardless of the veracity of the news or the authenticity of the photos attributed to the minister, Leila Benali should request to be relieved of her duties immediately, until an investigation is opened into the case. The Prime Minister should assume responsibility in the matter, given that the minister is part of his cabinet, and because the matter is related to a clearly defined financial crime.
What is required today is to open a judicial investigation, under the supervision of the public prosecution, into the reported conflict of interest in the deal between the minister's lover and the Office Chérif des Phosphates, as is done in democratic countries that respect their citizens. All those proven to be involved in this scandal should be referred to trial, responsibilities and sanctions should be determined, because the matter concerns the interests of the country. Morally, the deal should be canceled and reconsidered in case of conviction. However, remaining silent as part of an ostrich policy, waiting for the situation to "cool down" and for Moroccans to forget what happened, is nothing but a premeditated desire to normalize government corruption, which has become a stench in the nostrils.

Anas Elbaz Calls Out Fake Influencers Using Sex and Money in Moroccan Entertainment Industry
I had the pleasure of interviewing the talented Moroccan actor Anas Elbaz many times in Morocco. We first crossed paths when I was hired as the publicist for the "Casanegra" Movie, in which Anas starred and shot to fame in Morocco and other countries after winning Best Actor at the Dubai Film Festival. Working with Anas was an absolute riot!
Recently, Anas has been making headlines in Moroccan media, shedding light on his absence from the artistic scene. He blames the rise of influencers for monopolizing the industry and that directors and producers favor these social media stars over professional actors. Instead of casting professionals like Anas, movie directors opt for these so-called influencers willing to pay their way into the spotlight. Anas revealed in a live Instagram session that one influencer shelled a whopping 20K to appear on a popular show in Morocco. These fake influencers are using their wealth (that they get, especially in the Middle East, where my fellow citizens have the worst reputation over there) to fake their way into the entertainment industry, flaunting a lifestyle that is far beyond the means of the average Moroccan worker.
We're not talking about Hollywood A-listers here, folks. We're talking about the wannabe celebrities of Mama Africa. It's a jungle out there, and Anas Elbaz is not afraid to call out the imposters.
Anas questioned why movie directors would hire him when they were being paid by influencers, not only with hush money but also with sex. He humorously mentioned that some influencers have money and the "Algerian President" on their side. Interestingly, the family name of the Algerian President translates to "Vagina" in Moroccan Darija. In Moroccan culture, where saying "Vagina" is considered taboo, people often use the term "Algerian President" as a substitute, making it a trendy alternative. So, how can one find work in the entertainment industry when cash and the "Algerian President" are involved?

Moroccans and Pornography During Ramadan
In Morocco, like in many Muslim-majority communities, it's common for people to refrain from romantic activities during Ramadan, especially if they're not married. But things are changing, especially in 2024. More and more individuals are starting to engage in premarital activities, even though some traditional barriers are still in place. Most Moroccans live with their families, so bringing a partner home is usually frowned upon. However, sneaky meetups happen when parents aren't paying attention and neighbors are busy. This situation is shared among the general population, except for the wealthy minority. Talking openly about these things is still considered taboo, but my colleague and friend, journalist Nora Fouari, isn't afraid to shine a light on these realities. She recently shared Google's data on porn consumption during Ramadan through her media outlet, H-News.
Many Moroccans are fully embracing the spirit of Ramadan by indulging in their favorite pastime - watching Porn! Yes, you heard right, and Google stats confirm it. Thank God it is not any of us; otherwise, we'll face an immense backlash. H-news published the stats for those who'll open their mouth before finishing the article. The latest Google Trend figures show that Moroccans are increasing their porn consumption during the holy month, with peak viewing hours starting right after iftar.
The Souss Massa region appears to be leading the way in this not-so-holy activity, closely followed by Tangier-Tetouan, Rabat-Salé-Quneitra, and Chaouia. Who would have thought that Ramadan could be such a lively time for Moroccans? Maybe they're just trying to balance out all the fasting and praying with a bit of sexy entertainment.
So, the next time you feel guilty about enjoying some porn during Ramadan, just remember - you're not alone. Moroccans are right there with you, watching until the early morning hours. Ramadan, a time for reflection, prayer, and...?

The Moroccan nouveau riche spend sleepless nights during their Umrah pilgrimages
In a recent article by Moroccan media outlet H-News, the riveting trend of wealthy individuals and influencers from Morocco jetting off to Mecca to flaunt their riches has caused quite a commotion. What was once a sacred pilgrimage spot has now been transformed into a glamorous stage for showcasing opulence, with these individuals going above and beyond to exhibit their lavish lifestyles on social media. Mecca, once a place for profound spiritual reflection, has become a playground for Moroccan influencers and the nouveau riche to parade their wealth. It's like a twisted fairytale where even in Mecca, the epitome of spiritual enlightenment, these individuals manage to turn it into a platform for their extravagant self-promotion. Oh, the absurd lengths people will go to to flaunt their wealth!
According to H-News, Umrah was once a revered religious pilgrimage, but now it seems to have been reduced to a mere fashion show for the nouveau riche in Morocco. These individuals have genuinely mastered transforming a spiritual journey into a spectacle of wealth and status. Instead of seeking spiritual growth, they are more preoccupied with showcasing their designer outfits and luxurious accommodations overlooking the Meccan Haram. Oh, the irony of it all!
It's hilarious how these individuals prioritize showing off their wealth instead of focusing on their spiritual duties. Their Instagram profiles are a shrine to their extravagant lifestyles, all in the name of religious devotion. Who needs to be humble and modest when you can flaunt your Hermes and Gucci?
According to H-News sources, these rich folks are practically attached at the hip to their designer suits, mini-wallets, and iPhones, eager to capture every moment of their trip. They've all snagged rooms at the most expensive hotels near Haram, bragging about their luxurious accommodations. Umrah has turned into a high-end vacation centered around luxury and entertainment. Some have even brought their spouses along, while others seem perfectly content with their male partners or mistresses. Oh, the joys of religious tourism!
Oh, the ostentatious display of wealth and status in the most sacred places! How heartwarming to witness such devotion to material possessions and status symbols. Indeed, these nouveau riche Moroccans have redefined the concept of a spiritual journey.
According to various H-News sources, the average cost of a pilgrimage to the Holy Land is estimated at least $15,000. However, our esteemed elite have chosen to go above and beyond, spending a whopping $70,000 for what they call "nights of anonymity" during Umrah. It's fascinating how this sudden surge in Umrah spending coincides with the fact that many of these individuals are now stuck in the country, tangled in investigations and legal battles over embezzlement and misuse of public funds meant for the Moroccan people. Oh, the irony!

The Jewel Heist Controversy: Moroccan Business Tycoon Under Fire for Ring Theft
In a sensational twist of events, the renowned Moroccan business powerhouse, Farida Jirari, finds herself at the center of a gripping tale involving a precious ring. H-News, the beacon of Moroccan media, broke the story that has set the town abuzz.
Picture this: a glamorous businesswoman, president of a prestigious association encompassing top-tier companies, managers, and entrepreneurs in Morocco, accused of pilfering a luxurious ring from an acquaintance named E.A. The drama unfolds in the backdrop of a beauty clinic near the iconic Hassan II Mosque.
The saga traces its roots over a year ago when E.A. inadvertently left her cherished ring in the clinic's bathroom. Enter Farida Jirari, accompanied by her sister, who allegedly swooped in and seized the opportunity, lifting the valuable accessory. E.A., who had been tirelessly attending events hoping to spot her lost ring, finally saw it adorned by Jirari in an Instagram post. Confrontation ensued, leading to a heated exchange and, eventually, a formal theft complaint filed with the judicial police.
As the story unravels, E.A., a prominent contractor, presents documented evidence substantiating her ownership of the ring valued at over two million Moroccan centimes. Jirari, on the other hand, claims it was a gift from her ex-husband but fails to produce any supporting documents.
In a surprising turn of events, Jirari, a luminary in business circles, concedes defeat. The police report states she relinquished the contested ring, expressing a disinterest in the ongoing dispute. In a call with H-News, Jirari vehemently denies any intention to steal, attributing the accusations to jealousy. She asserts that the complainant's motive stems from a professional fallout and a refusal to align her company with Jirari's esteemed association.
Jirari, confident in her innocence, declares, "I have my own possessions and jewelry; I don't need to resort to theft. The judiciary has acquitted me of these baseless allegations. My reputation speaks for itself; those who know me understand my commitment to integrity and honesty. I'm focused on my work, my children, and my home – not seeking scandal or distortion."
When questioned about her relationship with E.A., the accuser, Jirari clarifies that they only cross paths due to their children attending the same school.
In the high-stakes world of glittering accusations and glamorous personalities, Farida Jirari's saga continues to captivate the imagination, leaving the audience eagerly awaiting the next dazzling twist in this riveting tale.

Moroccan artist Imane Tsunami, known for her contributions to the arts, recently passed away due to the effects of a harmful witchcraft known as 'Tokal'. Internet Users Slam Moroccan Soccer Player Nouhaila Benzina for the 'Hypocrite' Shakehand
Internet users have unleashed their fury upon Moroccan soccer player Nouhaila Benzina, labeling her a "hypocrite" for her recent handshake with FIFA president Gianni Infantino. In the Islamic religion, shaking hands with a non-mahram woman (someone unrelated) is a big no-no, especially if she is wearing a hijab. It seems that Nouhaila, who hails from Morocco, where Islam is the predominant religion, should have known better.
But that's not all! Not only is there a controversy surrounding her participation in soccer, which is considered Haram (forbidden) in Islam, but internet users are also scratching their heads over the contradiction between her modest attire and her actions on the field. Why cover your head and legs if you're just going to expose yourself to the male audience, both in the stadium and on television? And to add insult to injury, she not only shook hands with the FIFA president but also engaged in a lengthy and enthusiastic handshake, even using both hands!
Curiously, Nouhaila has remained silent amidst the controversy and backlash. We eagerly await her explanation for why shaking hands with any man is Haram, except, of course, when it comes to the president of FIFA. Ah, the Moroccan drama continues...
