I turn off the Internet and remain in my chair for the amount of time I predetermine and usually that works. I start typing.

My other method is to wait until I feel really terrible. Let a month pass, or longer, and then, eventually, I begin again because it is the only way to stop feeling terrible. I do not recommend this method. (less)

Sometimes, when I get truly pissed off at myself for not writing, I feel finally inspired to write.

That is the plain truth. I rarely feel inspired, rarely catch an idea as if it is coming straight from a rainbow, but when I am actually writing, I realize how much I love doing it. The inspiration comes only when I am in the process of doing it, when the write word comes, the right idea, a new character, a line of dialogue. Even answering this question, I realize that I love to write. I wish I did it more. I don't think anyone should wait for inspiration.

Questions

I asked myself a question today on Goodreads and then I answered it. I also discovered that a reader had asked me a question, except that it wasn't a question. It was praise. I love that. I answered her question, even though technically it wasn't a question.

It made me think how cool that you can come to an author's page here and ask them a question and get an answer. So, ask me something? Or I ca Read more of this blog post »

Marcy Dermansky, The Red Car

“I was brand-new in San Francisco, right out of college, and I thought it was thrilling, a guy buying me a drink. I didn’t think, how tacky, this creep is buying me a drink. I thought, how amazing, I put on lipstick and a short skirt and look what can happen.”
