Hi Jessica,
That was part of the original inspiration for the novel. The History Behind The Queen’s Companion

At the end of my novel, I have an “author’s note” which is (deliberately…) less revelatory than some might like, so I thought I’d rectify that with a blog post, intended for the general reader who wants to know a bit more, but also both for my academic colleagues who might want to use this book in a course, and for their students.

First, I should point to some earlier posts on

2.5 stars, really. I’m a fan of Nix but this one is really mediocre. It started out well but it became nothing but events that did not rise to the level of a plot. Characters who had potential at first became cardboard cutouts. And the magic and the ...more

It’s a sweet book, light and fluffy. The astrology was a bit much. The cats were very uncatlike. My hunch is the translation was very poor — it didn’t feel like the book was about Japanese people.

I’ve wanted to read him for a while and I was glad to read this. He’s clearly a great writer. At the end of the day, it was a little too Wes Anderson does race for me, and I got, in, tired of elevators. But I’d read him again.

Look, it’s a very silly book but good fun. I do wonder at Mitford’s bravery n trying to publish it. Did she really think the war would stay phony long enough to get it into print for a receptive audience?
