Hello Raisa!

I just came across this, only one year after you posted it. It's not attached to a particular title, so I don't know which book you're referring to, but, no matter, I am so incredibly and sincerely honored that you read it over and over in your new school. Moving is hard. I did it, too, at 14, from my snug Indiana small town to a remote cluster of mobile homes in the Arizona desert. Books were a solace to me then more than ever. Coincidentally, I also became a librarian. I wrote my first three books in the public library where I worked (in AZ), after hours, on their computers. So I'm further honored to be honored by a Librarian, most revered member of society.
Let me know which book and I'll tell you the inspiration. And thank you so much for reaching out and making my day.

Patrick Jennings I do something else for a while. I work on another story. I ride my bike. I listen to music.

SKYPE-AN-AUTHOR

Online Author Visits (OAV) is a collective of "published children's and YA authors offering Skype visits to readers and writers of all ages." Skyping is an affordable alternative to an in-person author visit. Plus it allows me to talk to readers in, say, Saudi Arabia, without the the long flight.

I'm the Author of the Month in April, which means I published a guest post on the site. I hope you' Read more of this blog post »

“Through the window, I saw the beautiful world outside: the sky, the sun, the cacti, the rocks, and the dirt.
How I longed to return to it! I licked at the air, trying to smell the desert's delicious dusty scent, but could not. How was I able to see it without smelling it? Did humans control scents as well as the temperature and the waters?
Is that what windows were for, to keep out scents? Why did they wish to put invisible barriers between themselves and the world?”
Patrick Jennings, We Can't All Be Rattlesnakes

“My blood was boiling, which is not a good thing for a coldblood.
Dracula was dead. Rex was dying or dead.
Breakfast was dying.
And I was caring about it all. Meanwhile, that blasted Gunnar did nothing but sit and stare at his teevee all day.
He was the reason we were all here, the reason we were suffering and dying,
and he barely noticed us.
I hissed so hard it hurt.”
Patrick Jennings, We Can't All Be Rattlesnakes

“I was familiar with humans at this point only from afar, but even from there, I found them a pitiable species: scaleless, fangless, clawless, nearly furless, wingless, venomless, witless.
I honestly didn't understand how they had thrived so.”
Patrick Jennings, We Can't All Be Rattlesnakes
