The Book was finished. The Becoming wasn't
When I published On Becoming: Essays for Life’s Later Chapters, I knew I wasn't writing a book about arriving anywhere. The title itself should have warned me. Becoming is a verb. It implies movement, uncertainty, and the rather inconvenient possibility that just when you think you understand yourself, some previously hidden piece rises to the surface and asks to be examined.
