How do you deal with writer’s block?

Why do I believe it's more like #2 than #1? Because I don't think we're ever really blocked. Sure, there are many times when I don't know what to write next. But taking a little time to think this through is just as much a part of writing as writing it down.

So, sure, I get stuck. But I truly believe that that's part of what writing is. When I'm stuck, I know one or both of two things: I'm writing the wrong thing; I'm writing the right thing in the wrong way; or it's a little of both.

Regardless, this feeling of being "blocked" never really occurs to me. Being "blocked" to me seems like a permanent condition. But I've never gotten to a point with a piece of writing that felt like a permanent condition. I'll stop writing a piece; I'll pick another topic; I'll pick another angle on the same topic; but I never feel blocked.

I don't mean to say that "Writer's Block" isn't something many writers worry about or get frustrated by. I'm just saying that I think it's more useful to think of "Writer's Block" as just a normal—and important—part of writing.(less)

At other times, when I write essays, I'm helping people figure out how to solve a problem.

Writing, for me, is the main way I contribute to the world. And what I want to contribute is information people can use to make their lives better.

When someone writes me and says, "I used your book to..." and they're really happy about the result they got, that's the best thing about being a writer.

I think it's really just about being understood and acknowledged for what we do. That can come through just about anything. For me, it comes through writing. And making a contribution to other people's lives is the best thing for me about being alive.(less)
