I don’t often read gay romance—or any romance for that matter—even though I’ve written one myself. But I’ve seen the cover of this one around so much that I figured I’d give it a go TLDR: 4/5 stars, unnecessary trope of fake-dating, but sweet romance.

I don’t often read gay romance—or any romance for that matter—even though I’ve written one myself. But I’ve seen the cover of this one around so much that I figured I’d give it a go. It’s a story of two gay men in their late twenties who end up fake-dating for both of their benefit. One to help the dung beetle charity he works for and one to bring a date to his parents’ anniversary. The two main characters are both dysfunctional in relationships, and on top of that, one of them has a habit of getting “papped” in bad ways (paparazzi is on his back because his father is a famous musician from the 20th century). One such picture results in donors dropping out from his charity—he gets called a “bad gay”. In order to remedy it, he figured he’ll fake-date the handsome, clever barrister he’s fancied for a while but thinks has rejected him. And the barrister agrees, because he wants to take someone along to the aforementioned anniversary of his parents.

In my opinion, they may as well have been real-dating from the start. It was very obvious that they were in love with one another from the start, so the romantic confession of real love at the end felt a bit unnecessary. I understand that they’re both afraid of real relationships and this is why they start fake dating, but it felt like they weren’t so scared while they were essentially really dating even when they still pretended to fake-date. They even verbally told each other that they were getting real feelings, and they accepted that without much struggle and continued “fake dating” anyway. I’d say the author only makes them fake date to be able to use it as a trope, because, if you just take that away, they’re just two men dating one another before realizing they actually want to be in a relationship.

The chemistry and relationship between the two main characters was quite cute, I did enjoy their dynamic. They worked in their contrasting personalities and how they interacted with one another. I could find myself in Oliver a bit, since I too almost went to study law in a similar direction (but found my love for writing and the arts was bigger in the end), am into the same kind of person that he is, feel the same way about relationships and even have a similar eye color. And funnily enough, one of the characters in my own gay romance is called “Lucien”.

The other characters were cool too, though they felt a bit flat. Each character was distinct, though, I’ll definitely give the author that. I thought the character of Alex was a fun one, same with most other characters. They worked, but they felt very “character-y” in the sense that they didn’t really feel like they had a life when the main characters weren’t interacting with them.

Overall, I did have a good time with this book—most of the time. If you want to read a fake-dating book about The Gays, I’m not sure if I can recommend it, but if you just want to read a romance of two guys who’re both haunted by their pasts and trying to date one another, I’d say this is a fairly good one. ...more

Growing up, I’ve watched some youtube conspiracy theory videos about Britney and her conservatorship, so I was aware at least of the things that fans thought happened to her. Hearing this book was a conclusion to the mystery on that. And my god, what a hell she’s been through. This memoir is a heavy one, because though she’s been in the media a lot throughout her life, I doubt many people knew what she was actually going through. This story, if anything, is a story of survival. I am so glad that it has a happy ending, and that she has managed to escape. I highly recommend the book.

When I started reading this (audiobook, I’m 50/50 on whether or not it’s reading but it’s helped me finish a lot of books a lot quicker) I’d slowly started slipping into a bit of a reading slump after the last book I’d read. That one was just the perfect book—so in my lane, so well written, etc.—so any book thereafter would surely be a disappointment. Just so happened to be this one, so I stopped reading for a week or two. But now, with regained spirit, I finished it. Incredible book. Horrifying story. 5/5 stars.

It’s a very private and close up insight into her life both professionally and privately. It’s wild to hear what it’s been like for her, arguably one of the biggest stars at that time. Even before the conservatorship, which I’m sure is the part that a lot of people skip ahead to. Her start at Disney, then becoming a massive pop star. Essentially pulling her family out of poverty, which is something no child should bear any responsibility for. And then her later years, her relationships, her finding her religion (and losing it, to gain it back later).

I’m not gonna lie, if I’d have been in her shoes, I don’t think I would’ve handled it as gracefully as she has, even when she was drugged out by her father and the medical staff. There’s just an insane strength in her. Of course, auto biographies are biased, but I believe what she’s saying. And no one should ever face such betrayal by their own family, let alone (ex)lovers. It’s a miracle she’s still alive. More than anything, this book made me feel for her. It’s brave, too, that she decided to write about it. Writing is already a very personal thing, let alone when you’re writing about your own life.

I hope she’ll get to live the rest of her life however she wants to live it.

Your own mortality is something you don't often want to think about for too long. I know it's been a source of great anxiety for me, ever since I was a child. Not so much the thought of death, but of not having enough time to do everything you want to do, or feel you should do. Death is one thing that connects us all, for it will come for every last one of us. This story, therefore, is one that everyone can relate to. Perhaps not to the individual character, but the sense of clinging onto life as best as you can, to whatever means necessary. It made me think about what I would do, if the devil were to turn up in my living room.

If cats disappeared from the world, written by Genki Kawamura, is a story about a man who learns he has stage four brain cancer. He would have at most six months, though it is far more likely that he will die within a week. This information is hard for anyone to swallow, and so it is for our main character. When he gets back home, he passes out on the doorstep. After he regains consciousness, he finds a doppelgänger of himself; this turns out to be the devil. He gives the main character an opportunity: one extra day of life in exchange for one thing disappearing from the world, as long as there are things to disappear, so long shall he live.

This Japanese piece of literature poses some interesting questions, and tells a compelling story at the same time. Though I did expect to read more about how life would be without all of the things that disappear; we didn't get much of that. We'd hear about what it'd likely be like, and what kind of impact the things had on everyday life, but anything beyond their point of disappearance was a void. We simply continued with the main character's story, and he was hardly impacted by any of the disappearances. I would consider this a flaw in most other books, but in this one, I felt it wasn't the point of the story.

I couldn't help but tear up a couple of times throughout the story. Though the concept of the story is heartbreaking in and of itself, there were moments where I felt particularly strongly about whatever the author was putting forth. Though the thought of death is not always on the forefront of my thoughts, it remains in a comfortable room somewhere in my mind at all times. Added to that the strains of growing up, and aging into adulthood, and it hit home. What if life will never reach the peaks you hoped for when you were a kid? Of course, dreams of being a knight, or being the leader of the entire world won't come true. But even the smaller dreams, like becoming an author, or a painter, or finding someone to put your love into––there is no guarantee for a happy ending.

Now, I don't think the point of life is searching for a happy ending. What's more important is following your passions, enjoying time with the people around you, enjoying time spent with yourself. Though this story did not have a miraculous ending of a full recovery––and it was, in fact, very bittersweet, leaning heavy towards the bitter side––it was a beautiful one. It pulled together some strings that were set into place throughout the story. We didn't get goodbyes to some of the characters we met in the story, and it felt rather abrupt, but I feel like that's just how life goes. And the non-goodbyes were goodbyes regardless, I feel like. Maybe their introduction to us was their goodbye to the main character.

I've read some reviews on this book before diving in, and some said that the characters felt flat, or devoid of humanity. I don't think that's true. I think they are human enough, and fleshed out just enough for this story to work. It may not be the peak of character work, but it certainly is not the lowest point of the valley. Admittedly, the characters were created for the purpose of the book's philosophy, yes. But aren't all characters? Certainly in these types of books––it's similar to a book I read recently, The Unbearable Lightness of Being. In that one, too, the characters were human enough, but definitely stood for points that the author was attempting to convey.

This book was largely written in inner dialogue and memories of the past. I had expected this, going into it, so I was not put off by it. Though I assume, if you're here for an adventurous story about a deal with the devil, you could be disappointed. Do know that it is a lot of tell, and not show. I did not mind it though, it felt calm. And that was exactly what I came to this book for.

In short, I do recommend this story for lovers of Japanese literature, or those in search of some philosophy on death and humanity. It is not some world-changing novel that will reshape the way you see the world, but it will give you an afternoon of contemplation––and maybe, if it hits you right, a pair of hazy eyes and striped cheeks. ...more

Oh, the book of doors. I'm nothing if not a sucker of magical books. There's a kid in every adult, and whenever magical books are mentioned, mine awakes. This book was a breath of nostalgia and wonder, even though I've never read it before. It reminded me of why I started reading as a child––or rather, why I continued. The book of doors is a wonderful story of magic, friendship, villains and books. I rated this one as highly as I have based on feeling more than anything. Right off the bat, I can tell you I recommend this book highly. I had a great experience reading it, I'm sure you will, too.

The book is about Cassie Andrews, who is gifted a book by an old man that sits in the bookstore she works at often. This book turns out to be the book of doors. The book of doors allows the user to open any unlocked door and step out through an entirely different door, locked or unlocked, anywhere on the planet (and, as we find out later, anywhere in time). Naturally, this great power comes with people who hunt it. Thus begins the game of cat and mouse.

Like I mentioned earlier, this book was a relief of sorts to me. I hadn't read in a long time due to my own work as an author––I saw many words everyday in my own books, I didn't feel much for adding more words to that. Not the type of books I was reading when I stopped, anyway. The books I read before I stopped were often either non-fiction or deeply philosophical books. And though they're great to read, I missed the whimsy. This book gave me that. Yes, it's serious, and yes, a lot is at stake. But the whimsy of magical battles, secret missions, trips to the past, and a friendship with an old man felt like coming home.

This book, though magic books are not something ground-breaking, was still sufficiently creative in its magic system and world building. I was surprised when the story told me where the books had actually come from. It was a bit "chosen one" esque, but in the grand scheme of things, I didn't mind it as much as I would've in other books.

The characters did feel a bit flat at times, they did not wholly escape their tropes, roles, whatever you want to call it, but they worked in the context of the book. Sometimes, as long as the story is written well––which this one is––it doesn't matter if we don't get the highest level of character building. And that is not to say that these characters weren't thought out. There was a rather large cast of characters, but all felt unique in tone and behavior, and complemented the story. Like mentioned before, I loved the friendship that Cassie built with the old man who gave her the book. 10/10.

I chose to do a spoiler free review for this book, so this is where the review ends. If you ever feel like a fantasy story that makes you feel like a kid again, this is the one. It's not by any means child-like in writing, but it gave me the same feeling I had all those years ago. And for that, I can only thank Gareth Brown for writing "The Book of Doors", and I hope I convinced you to read it based on this review. ...more

1984 has long been one of my favorite novels, so I was hopeful for animal farm to give me a similar feeling. Orwell is known for his thought provoking work, and I think this novel, though still very applicable to today, just felt too predictable. Yet, there is something to say for a story where its symbolism isn't hidden deep in the white space between the letters.

Animal Farm is everything I expected it to be, yet somehow had me struggling to get through the story. It may be that the story is too familiar––and too accurate for our current day political world––and that that was the thing that put me off of it. In that case, it's not a criticism against Orwell and his work, but rather for it. I think I may have enjoyed this book more if it were not for the pig in control of the world's greatest army in current day.

The characters in this were very well thought out as reflections of groups of humanity. The sheep, repeating everything they're told and blindly going along––and creating chaos while doing so, raising their voices so loudly that no one else is able to speak coherently. The strong work force of the horse Boxer, the worker who gives his body and mind to the one in control in blind trust, yet is sold to the slaughterhouse as soon as he's no longer useful. The pigs, testing what they can get away with and taking more and more for themselves. Eventually even becoming the very ones they sought to overthrow. The donkey that sees everything and is simply disillusioned because of it. The scapegoat that was Snowball, portraying the "evil" that can be used to shove blame onto.

As with 1984, there was a sense of inescapability to the thing. The issues are already too far gone to change them in a meaningful way at the end of both stories. It's a very, very good tactic to drive the point of the story home––that sometimes, things are inescapable, and thusly is the way of men––however the sense of doom and dread was not something I was looking for. My mistake, because it's one of Orwell's works; doom and dread are a near guarantee.

Still, the ending scene is bone chilling. Not in its cruelty, but in its threat of inevitability. It makes one wonder whether the loop of master and slave is one that we can one day break, or if it will truly go on forever, as long as intelligent life exists.

This story was most likely one about communism; it wasn't hard to pick up, they called one another comrade. Still, I think its progression applies to most systems put in place by humans. Though capitalism hadn't reached its dying breath yet when the book came out, we can see in today's world that those who get an inkling of power and especially money will soon try to get more and more. Though the term of "sheeple" is highly over-used, there is something to be said for it. The loud groups that take up so much attention that communication is warped.

Anyway, I did not enjoy the book in the slightest but am still inclined to recommend it because it is written cleverly. The progression from camaraderie to tiranny is one that is executed very well. It is realistic, it's harrowing, it's a bit too close to home.

It's a short book, so it shouldn't take up too much of your time. If you've got some spare hours, pick it up, and see for yourself how society is put together––at least in Orwell's time. And maybe you'll gain a new topic to pull out with thanksgiving or over your Christmas dinner. ...more
