I write Washington, D.C. police procedurals. My detectives Mac Burke and Oliver Shaw, work homicide for the Metropolitan Police Department. Their cases tend to be complicated and dangerous.

Before I started writing fiction, I spent years inside the world that informs these stories. I was a Special Agent with the Air Force Office of Special Investigations, worked a major leak case at the Pentagon, went to Georgetown Law at night, served as an investigator for the D.C. Public Defender, practiced as a trial lawyer most of my career, and taught law at Loyola University Law School in New Orleans.

I have spent a lot of time around investigations, courtrooms, and the kind of people who end up in both.

James Spoonhour answered James Spoonhour's question: Where does the plot of Incentive for Death come from? Believe it or not, I woke up in the middle of the night and saw an ad on tv to sell your life insurance policy. My reaction was, "What could go wrong with that/" The rest is history.
