Petrie has been enchanted by the sea for as long as she can remember. She became a certified SCUBA diver while in high school, and spent many years exploring coastal waters. Her fascination with marine invertebrates grew while working for the New England Aquarium as an Outreach Specialist. Since then, she’s spent years caring for these fascinating sea animals, and teaching children and adults about the habitats and sea life commonly found near the shore. The material covered in her children's stories are topics commonly taught by Petrie in her popular sea animal programs. Petrie has experience in all facets of the sea, having spent several years as the assistant plant manager of a large, Gloucester/Boston seafood company.

I've been thinking of going to Siesta Key, FL in the fall when sea turtles come onto the beach to lay their eggs. Once I think of a great story, I'm sure I'll develop it into a picture book. Stay tuned! It's on my radar. I love sea turtles as much as your son does!(less)

Many people asked me to write a book about lobsters, and I would always tell them that it's been done. That's until a lobster fisherman from Gloucester MA gave me the gift of a handsome, cyan blue lobster. He knew the lobster was somewhat weak and would need special care for a while. The lobster fisherman wanted the blue lobster to be taken to schools so that thousands of students would have the opportunity to meet and learn about him.

I took care of "George" (named by a group of children at an Augusta, Maine Barnes & Noble Storytime) for two months, and didn't take him anywhere during that time to allow him to gain his strength. While I was sitting on my deck on a warm September morning, discussing with my husband why I wasn't going to write a story about a lobster, a story idea came to me. Three days later, I'd written the prose to a brand new book that is an exciting blue lobster adventure, including factual information about lobsters wrapped into the tale. A year later, the illustrations are complete, and the book is at my printer in Wisconsin, where I know they're doing a great job bringing my project to fruition.(less)

New England Aquarium’s Ice Sculpture Honors Sea Lions This New Years Eve (2023)

The ice sculpture that adorns the New England Aquarium’s entrance is always a favorite. This year’s sea-themed sculpture is especially relatable to anyone who’s had the opportunity to see the sea lion exhibit at the New England Aquarium. I had the opportunity to do just that last January and it didn’t disappoint.

This year’s sculpture was created by Don Chapelle, from Lawrence, MA, who used thirty-

The Lucky Hermit Crab and Her Swirly New Shell by Janice S.C. Petrie
"Children’s books are hard to review. I mean I don’t want to write something that has more text than the book, you know?

This one tells the story of a hermit crab who outgrows her shell, the dangers of being without a shell, how she finds a new one, an" Read more of this review »
