Thrilling historical adventure
My new novel, THE VIKING QUEEN'S CUNNING has gained lots of 5-star ratings in just over a month!
It's a thrilling historical adventure of bold women questing for freedom and peace.
There’s even worse to come, for you and your family. A large band of men are on their way to the fortress. They've been ordered to set light to it – to burn it right down if necessary. They’ve sent a message ahead: everyone has a single day – one day only! – to get out. They plan to arrive at sundown tomorrow. Anyone still within the walls at that time will be burned alive, along with all the buildings!’
The Viking king is endlessly conquering more land and enslaving the people. His formidable mother Queen Aud fears the slaves will rebel, and urges him to make peace before it is too late.
Then her free-spirited granddaughter Gerd refuses to enter a forced marriage. In revenge, the rejected suitor treacherously murders the king, plunging the realm into civil war. The remaining royal family flees into the wilderness, but escape seems impossible – for the enemy has burned all the Viking ships.
Can any of them survive the hardship? What will become of Queen Aud’s buried treasure? How long can Gerd evade the monstrous brute she refused to marry? Is there any man from either side who they dare to trust?
Under Queen Aud’s bold leadership, they repeatedly manage to outwit the enemy. But a final attack by evil sorcerers puts her cunning to its greatest test. Is she really a woman who can never be beaten?
This is a dramatic page-turner, full of unexpected twists and turns, family drama and romance. It vividly depicts the Viking Age in a way you’ve never seen it before: through the eyes of its strong, free-thinking women.
* Witness sumptuous feasts, shudder at the spells of evil sorcerers, and applaud the unearthing of spectacular buried treasure
* Visit royal palaces, a remote monastery high in the mountains, and a secret forest hideout
* Meet mighty kings, rebellious slaves, wandering musicians, a mysterious prophetess – and the awe-inspiring, real-life Viking Age woman, Aud the Deep Minded
* Experience the terror of travelling alone through windswept wilderness, and sailing a Viking ship through a violent, supernatural storm

My books of world myths, legends, folk tales and fairy tales
Hello and thank you for your interest in my books!
MY BOOKS
I’ve written over 70 books published in 22 countries, with total world sales of nearly a million. My books have been highly acclaimed by reviewers, several times shortlisted for awards, won a major award in Japan, dramatised on BBC Radio and recommended by the American Library Association. I've worked for many leading publishers including Penguin, DK, OUP, CUP, British Museum, British Library, The National Trust – and currently Batsford. I also have my own successful small imprint, Talking Stone.
MY CURRENT WORK WITH WORLD MYTHS & LEGENDS
I've been working with myths, legends, folk tales and other old stories from all over the world for a very long time. I have a unique knowledge of the genre, with thousands of such tales stored on my database.
I research each title very thoroughly, going back to the oldest available written versions. I retell the stories paying great attention to authenticity and respect for the peoples who first told them, adding interesting background notes. Each book of this kind can take up to 3 years to research and write.
You can find out all about my current books here:
